In Idaho expanding broadheads are illegal for hunting big game, How about your state? Are they as effective as the mags say, or is it just hype?

varmintcaller, They are legal in North Carolina and I have used them, I do not like them but also I do have some friends that love them. I like the steel force broad head that only take about 3 Lbs. of pressure to get through the skin and have yet to see one not go through a deer. To me the expanding broad heads are a wast of time. By the way I shot a Mathews Switchback, Gold Tip carbon arrows cut at 29" and a steel force 125 grain broad head, whisker biscuit arrow rest.

They work... I started shooting the Vortex 125 gr years ago...
I recently bought some Black Mamba 100 grain broadheads to use with my new bow.
I can`t say about these, havent shot anything with em yet.If they cut as nasty as they look,oh the humanity

In Colorado, expandables are legal, but many guys I know are wary of them, especially for elk. Personally, I prefer a fixed, 2-blade broadhead with single bevel. It takes a bit of practice to get them sharp, but that is part of the joy of archery for me. I know exactly what the broadhead will do every time I fling it.
If you have never checked it, I recommend Dr. Ed Ashby's Arrow Lethality reports. He began studying broadhead performance in the 1980's, and is still at it. He made some very interesting studies using both live and recently killed big game in Africa, Give him a google and look at his stuff. I have a couple of his reports, but am not able to get them to attach here. Traditional Bowhunter magazine had a good articel by him last fall.
