Depending on how much you want to spend crossbows come in a wide price range.  In my opinion the best and top-of-the-line crossbow is a Tenpoint crossbow.  http://www.tenpointcrossbows.com/  They have a built-in cocking mechanism that reduces in draw weight down to five pounds on the crank handle.  Other brands have a cocking mechanism that you have to attach to cock the crossbow then remove after the crossbow is cocked.  The majority of the crossbow's they make are compound split limb, they do make a couple recurve crossbow's.  They also have a custom shop now, and they will put a wood stock on the crossbow.

The next one.  I don't know too much about is the Excalibur crossbow.  http://www.excaliburcrossbow.com/  They only make recurve crossbow's.  I have heard a lot of good things about them though.

Another one that's not quite as expensive as the first two I mentioned is Horton.  http://www.crossbow.com/  I have heard good things about them.  But I have no personal experience with them.

I strongly recommend you stay away from Barnett.  They are cheap and they are cheaply made.

If you do an Internet search will probably find a couple other brands.  Parker, Great Lakes are just a couple others that come to mind.

I'm shooting an older Tenpoint crossbow called a Stealth X 2.  It shoots around 312 FPS.  It's fairly quiet for crossbow and deadly accurate.  If I leave an arrow in the target and aim at that arrow and shoot again I will hit it.  So I never leave a arrow in the target when I'm shooting.  My dad shoots a Profusion crossbow made by Tenpoint.  It's a little bit slower.  I'm thinking 300 FPS.  It was also a lot cheaper than mine or any of their top-of-the-line ones.  But it's still a very solid crossbow.

I hope this helps you make a decision.  If you have any more questions just ask.

Bill

Thanks wildbill, my wifes father shoots a Horten and I was not impressed at all, compared to my switchback. I do not know if I will be able to shoot it anymore ( my compound) and will probably go to a crossbow but will be six to eight months before I buy one

I shoot a Horton, and for the money, it suites me fine. It hits consistantly in a 2'' circle at 25 yards. Got me a nice deer with it this year.

By the way 25souper, I'm from the Boone area. How far would that be from you.

Love my TenPoint ProFusion!

Tried several different X-bows before buying it....The AccuDraw w/crank was the final selling point.

$pendy, but worth it,IMO.

No deer yet,but still looking....

Also liked Parker,Excaliber,Horton....try several; find the one that fits you.

And you'll know it when you find it!

Horton....it is the 'go-to' crossbow for those wanting to save some money.  Very good value for the dollar spent.

TenPoint....kind of like buying a Cadillac.  Price is a little higher then it needs to be, but generally you'll be getting a "X" shooter!

Parker....have had a few of these returned to the shop with the barrel ripped in half.  Parker is aware of the problem and has been trying to resolve it.

Crossman....stay away, very far away.  These are all being return to the store.  Bottom line-junk!

Bowtech....What can you say?  A crossbow that will flat out shoot the lights out at ranges not shot with them before.  Top of the line, 405fps(that's still the fastest)!!  But the price hasn't come down yet....go figure.

Scott (just my 0.005 cents) B

Well i just bought an Excalibur Equinox....although i havent gone hunting with it yet.I based my choice on Quality, accuracy, and recurve limbs. Excalibur has a solid reputation for backing up their warranty(5 years) but have heard they will support it for purchasers life.As far as accuracy goes they have won major crossbow competitions last 6 years in row.Recurve bows alot easier to change broken strings in the field compared to compound ,plus they just look so damn pretty! Also their websight is awsome teaches you about history of crossbow and everything else you need to know. You should check it out very informative.

I have an Excalibur. You will like it. It has made the cleanest, most humane kills I have ever experienced in the field— not necessarily exclusive to it, but a revelation to me as a life-long rifle hunter. Extremely well made. Very, very accurate. Excellent customer support.

(Can you tell that I am pleased with mine?)

Back in 1989, I was run over by a "runaway" tractor trailer and the accident almost cut off my left arm, The deltoid muscle was almost completely cut away, leaving me unable to pull even a light poundage compound. I've been hunting with a crossbow ever since the accident. I'm on my sixth crossbow, being unhappy with the "results" of crossbows. I now hunt with a excaliber exomag, and am very pleased with it. It is the only crossbow that I've used that I am happy with. When I hunted with a compound, I never left a deer in the woods < unable to find it> The excaliber is the only crossbow that I've used that hasn't let me down, either not enough energy or not accurate enough. IMHO, excaliber is the BEST way to go when talking crossbow !!

My dad shoots a Parker and has been happy with it. I have a Excalibur which I like, granted with Michigan law I do not get to use mine as much. Depend on how much you want to spend.

I've had an excalibur exomag for 9 years. replace the string when needed by myself, no cables, no timing issues, shoots very accurately. Parkers are a very good bow if wheels are your choice.
Interesting thing with compound xbows. the techs where they sell them will tell you a lot of bs. change the strings every year, do cables at same time(Look at parker web site and talk to them, you'll find out how much bs that is)
one guy said sight the crossbow in and don't shoot it anymore-too much pressure on the limbs. parkers people"never heard such a thing."

techs want to make sales and profit-changing strings and cables are one way to do that.

I personally chose Excalibur based on 1. accuracy(I did 3 William tells)(robin hoods for regular bow people) before I started shooting a individual dots.
2.balance-just felt better to me when shooting
3. by being able to change/replace my own string I removed the need to pay/see/listen to crap from technicians.
4. Excalibur people are really dedicated-I checked the forum way back when and found a lot of experienced people giving good advice-and that was the customers. The staff have always answered my questions with respect and facts.
I have met Bill Troubridge 3 times and talked to his wife 2 times-both super people. good luck with your choice

I have a Barnett wildcat c5 and it shoots great.Sometimes people seem to think you have to buy the highest priced product to hunt/shoot with for it to be a good one.Thats far from the truth. My Barnett has serviced me flawlessly for about 3yrs now and taken SC whitetails. So for the money, try a Barnett you may not even like crossbows and if you dont that way you wont be out a lot of money!

When PA opened a crossbow season i was not very interested because i hunted with a compound bow. That changed soon as i got to shoot an xbow. There was not many around till they became legal to hunt with.I hunt with a barnett it shoots very good.I have taken a few deer with it very clean kills they were doe no bucks yet but they did not go far 40 or 50 yards that is of 3 i have gotten. One thing i wish i would have looked at is axle to axle length they are kind of a pain to carry through thicker areas.Horton makes a havoc axle to axle is 17.5"when not cocked 13.375 cocked.I would look at several and handle them there are more choices now from when i got mine but i still like my barnett just wish axle 2 axle was shorter. Also if your injury limits your pulling ability get a cocking device.Good luck
