Who makes a regular old style recurve bow?  About a 50lb pull.  I don't care for pulleys and wheels or laser sights.  I just want to fling some sticks in the back yard.

meister, I see tons of these in antique and second hand stores for about $25. Good ones too. Bear, Browning etc. Some might need a string but overall most are like new. RD

There are several makers out there, some are mass produced, and some are custom made, and there several in between.

Cost is always a factor, and inteded use.  Most catalog stores have one or two styles listed.

Been lookin for a black widow for a spell to bowhunt with but I have a sweet Diamond bow.Figure I`ll hunt with the recurve some and the Diamond some,,,

You might want to look on something like craiglist?  Or look around for someone building 'self-bows'?

I'd vote:

Fred Bear - should be able to get into the weight your looking for around $499.99(-ish)

Martin - makes a great take down in that weight class for about $699.99

That just what I carry at work.  I'm not a big 'wood guy'(now that sounds wrong in a few different ways-where is that Enzyte?), so I'm not going to say I know how these shoot compared to something really nice.  You could call a friend of mine that deals with a LOT of wood(not going there again).  He can be reached at (501) 663-2245 {Archer's Advantage in Little Rock, AR}

I'd look real careful at any of the limbs on any used bow (recurve or compound) for defects, especially the "glass" limbs for cracks or other defects that could "explode" under full draw....also check strings and maybe just start with a new string of the proper length for the bow in question IF you try a used bow.  Limbs could be twisted or warped so as not to function properly too.  How they had been stored is a factor also I believe to their relative condition.  Then too, some, maybe lots of bows don't have much "mileage" on them either so check carefully B4 buying & you may get lucky.

Warped limbs are pretty easy to spot, if you can see the bow 1st hand, but if it's an internet buy.....I dunno, guess get one of those 5-day inspection/return thingies?

The limbs...couple of problems.  The limb could 'look' very good......on the outside, but be a time-bomb waiting on the inside.  Pretty easy to inspect for this though, just place the bow limb against your ear and bend the limb a little and listen to the bow.  If there any problems, you'll hear it......just don't bend the limb excessively and let go!  It will hurt......a LOT!

You can take an ordinary eating spoon and tap the limbs. If there is a defect you will hear the difference. A bud makes his own near the mts. of NC. If interested just PM and will get you guys together. He got 57#s from his last one. He is putting on a class at our April gathering on throwing sticks, slings, and stalking. Hope some in the area can make it--April 16-18 near Rockingham, NC.

Anybody here remember Gorley Bows? I had a 40lbs one as a kid. My dad and Gorley went hunting wild pig in Hawaii, I got to tag along. I don't think they are in business any more.
