I have a bunch of pure lead I smeltered today and want to mix 60/40 wiping solder with it. Does 1# solder to 10# lead sound right?

Got 84# of lead melted on my turkey fryer and ran out of gas. 35 mi to town so it'll wait till I need something else. D**n!

That should work alright. If it doesn't I suppose you can always add more solder if you have any left.

1# solder to 10# pure will give you about a 19 to 1 mix, hardness give or take around 10 BNH.

I know of people who use 1 to 10 and 1 to 20 alloy are happy with that mix. I prefer a little antimony in the alloy. It gives it some more hardness.

Hardness most of the time is completely overrated.

Bullet fit and good lube will make a lot of hardness unnecessary. Unless one is trying to make a cast bullet do what jacketed bullets do best....

and then they are missing the soft center ( kinda like a hostess cupcake lolz )i always found it odd that some rifle bullets called for # 2 alloy yet some slower ( and less pressured ) pistol rounds called for linotype ......

:lol:I sorta get the chuckles when I read on the internet that you can't run soft lead over 7-800 fps, to go faster you need to go with stuff that should probably shoot thru both sides of a Russian t34, and gas checked...  But we run plainbased soft lead bullets to 13and 1400 fps in bpcrs all the time......

i have to admit that lino makes some beeyutiful and boadacious boolits...i guessed they wanted those rounds harder so they mite shatter and ricochet less lolz, i always found that funny too, most muzzle loaders run 12-1600 fps all with soft lead, i often think alot of it also has to do with the pressure curve ( but i freely admit that thaz just wild speculation on my part )ww with a wee bit of tin and a good lube does most my stuff ok and i use what lil lino i do have sparingly

I'm sure you know this but 20 to 1 provide good fill. When I shoot 44/40 and 45/70 BP it's perfect.

Ranch 13 hit's X with the bullet fit and lube. I rarely find it necessary to go to max loads but even before those pressures are achieved increasing hardness becomes important.

I sure miss the days when tire shops were happy to have you haul WW away.

Sometimes tho Lyman #2 is just the ticket for a bullet, but I have never found the need for anything harder than that in 40 someodd years of shooting cast bullets.

I use Lyman #2 for many of my common bullets. It is the hardness most of the time, it is what it does on impact.

I have to interject here with regards to alloys and lubes. I use both a 20:1 and a 16:1 alloy in my BP rifles. That 16:1 alloy is right off the box of factory 45-75 ammo. It works great as does the 20:1. As far as lube goes, I have used, since the late 50's on recomends from Elmer Keith (who I met through another friend from Darby, MT) back then and, believe it or not--P.O. Ackley. That mix is 50/50 Waterpump grease and Bees Wax. I use it in all my cast stuff and it makes good lube in the base of a Minie Ball also. My only concern now is the availabilty of Water Pump grease. What with the 21st Century and all, the availability of good ol stuff may be a thing of the past!

I don't know what all Harlan Sage puts in his Sagebrush Alox lube, but it's dang good stuff, black or smokeless.

I'm not good at math but I think what I ended up with is 15:1. I have 2 1/2# 60/40 solder to 14# pure lead. Is that about right? I figured the 2 1/2# solder was 1# tin and 1 1/2# lead plus 14# pure lead?
