I've been toying with the idea of purchasing  338 win mag, and decided to take the plunge. I've ordered a howa barreled action and already have a hogue overmolded stock for that action. < I replaced the stock on a 6.5x55 with a boyds classic>I've also ordered the lee 338-220 mold and have had a difficult time in finding any copper gas checks for that caliber. I did find on ebay some .011 aluminum gas checks. Has anyone used aluminum gas checks, and if so were they satisfactory? I've ordered a bag of 250, just to test them, but was wondering if I should continue to search for copper checks. This gun will be used for elk, and possibly bear but with the cost of premium bullets, most of my shooting will be with cast. I will hunt with premium bullets- most likely nosler partition.  Another plus for cast is they will be loaded "down" and the recoil won't be so stiff.

i havent used aluminum but many have ..perhaps not in this caliber but ( apparently a few have lolz ) ok here's what i know , hornady ( who in the last few years also supplied lyman ) discontinued this caliber , yes sir that bites but all hope isnt lost , while i'm not sure if they make a free check maker in this caliber gator checks does sell them in .338 , i popped over to cast boolits and looked in the group buy section , they have 2 bags of 1000 in stock
" 338 .338 GatorCheck; Max Shank= 0.327 $22 2 quantity in stock , shipping etc i believe also applies , i dont know if yoy're a member there or not if you are the login to the group buy page is at the bottom of every page ( login is same as screen name ditto your password ) and they are listed under dj's corner , if your not a member ( join ! ) here's blammer's gas check thread , of note prices are expected to go up shortly and when he sells this batch the next batch will prolly be higher , g'luck amigo

wsmreloader,
"I replaced the stock on a 6.5x55 with a boyds classic>"

Was that a Swede?
If so, how did it fit?

Thanks and have a good 'un, TCG

TCG, It was a Howa 1500 in 6.5x55 that I have recently purchased the hogue overmolded stock and barreled action. Had I not been in such a hurry, I would have waited on the Boyds stock < they were backordered and they said a two week delivery time> so I purchased the hogue stock to use while I waited on the Boyds stock. When the Boyds stock came in, I had a nice hogue overmolded stock in long action, so I had to get a barreled action to fit it. < 338WM-I've been wanting one for a while>. The Boyds stock fit perfectly, with no fitting required. It simply bolted to the action. It's a classic in forest camo laminate. This is the first Boyds stock that I've owned, and so far, I'm impressed with it.

My next problem is that I don't find a sizer die in this caliber. Does anyone know who makes one? I hava a lyman lub sizer so a die and top punch for that would be great. I also have used the lee push through sizer in other calibers and they work OK too.

as far as i know lyman makes one but only that size not one bigger or smaller ( tho one could hone it a wee bit bigger ) i'd also suggest buying it from a vendor vs. lyman's factory sales
" .338 2766488( part # or sku )
http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/bullet-casting/hi-sizing-dies.php
lee will make a custom one fairly reasonable and buckshot over at cast boolits makes custom ones

I use a freechex II and III to make GCs. The tools have more than paid for themselves. You can contact Charlie at Freechex. Give him the specs you want. As I recall Pat Martin over at Cast Boolits also makes a GC tool.

A friend of mine uses the Freechex tool to make checks out of aluminum No Trespassing signs. He measured the thickness of lots of different material and decided the signs are the most uniform and of the correct thickness.

He started out using drink cans but discovered they are to thin and require 2 per bullet to get the job done.

He has since designed and made his own tool that uses a modified die that screws into a reloading press and punches out and shapes the checks in 1 step.

+1 on the trespassing signs! No hunting signs are better!

Seriously I get them at Ace, Lowes or Home Depot and these signs work very well. The Gas Check size can be altered up or down by the thickness of the material use. For instance I can use the my 30 caliber Freechex to cut 8mm checks too by just using thicker material. Charlie explained how and why it works, I just am happy it does! The nice thing about a GC making tool is independence, and being self sufficient, one of the reasons we reload ain't it?!
