I used to cast a lot of bullets. 44, 9mm & 22. Now I am trying to get the stuff together to start again.
Several years ago (15 years) I loaned most of my stuff to a guy that had a 444 Marlin and was complaining about the price of bullets. He kept it for 3 or 4 years and when I asked for it back he returned my furnace and my 44 mold but not my lubrisizer and dies and gas checks.
Being to late to make a long story short I am shopping for new calibers and a new sizer.
BUT EVERYTHING IS ON BACK ORDER!

Many years ago I used to do a lot of casting. Lately, seeing the handwriting on the wall, I have started to accumulate the needfuls to resume that process. A furnace, more molds, lubes, etc. And lead. Lots of lead. The ways things are looking it could come in real handy.

I want to start casting too. I have a friend who works on the service drive of a Ford dealership and he said he would get me wheel weights. So about how many pounds does everyone try to keep on hand? Does anyone buy alloy from Midway? It seems kinda high to me to where you might as well buy jacketed stuff.

I've got about 800 pounds of WW, and about 200 lead. Never have enough, I'm always scrounging for more.

I have 1,500 pounds of lead on hand, with many pounds of Tin and some Antimony. Down at Becky's they have a whole lot more, but she is runing 9mm bullets for another week or so.

I once had a neighbor who was painting his name very carefully on his mail box. I was watching but couldn't see exactly what he was doing. When he finished he had left the R out of Scroggins.
He put it up anyway and it was that way till he moved.

Where are good places to go scrounge for lead, or places you usually run accross lead? My buddy works at a dealership in the service drive and told me he would get me WW's. I am not sure if he will be able to get me enough.

I go to junk yards for some of my lead. Some times I get large pigs from place that refurb large equipment, they use lead as a counter balance weight.
Car dealers and tire stores are the best place for WWs. These days, you may want to check gunbroker.com.

on the wheel weights make sure the retainer is molded into the lead ( if riveted on is usually zinc-not good at all)
i wasnt aware that there was troubles getting casting stuff too ( i should pay more attention) i was all to aware of the other shortages (including the unscruples scalpers)
pure lead abounds or rather soft enough to be considered pure( i prolly got a ton from doin demolition work )old plumbing, even old roof vents, shooting ranges can be mined ( but are often full of 22's that are very soft lead )i tore out a x-ray room once ,i split the "booty " with two other guys ,my share was 4 sheets( 8'x4')of lead (1/8")covered one side gyp board(that stuff stunk worse than the plumbing pipe smelting it down ) ,i havent come across any yet but those radio-isotopes containers looked to be a cheap source and clean as well !
the tin is where the highest cost for me is that and linotype which is harder to find in the so called modern world ,i also admit to getting spoiled buying cheap precast bullets ( hard to seem like only last year was the good ol'days [sigh] )
