I cast three different weights of bullets for my 223 rifles and my 221 Fireball Contender. The weights are 37, 50 and 55 grains. I size them to .224 and .225

You can make these bullets scream at over 2,000 fps, but they may not be the most accurate loads. If you make the alloy very hard, the bullets tend to break up on impact.

I shoot mine thru my T/C Contenders in 221 Fireball, my Contender Carbine in 223 and my Winchester Model 70 in 223.

I have never fired these CBs in my AR for fear it will plug up the gas system. Has any one shot CBs thru a AR or similar rifle ? Has there been problems or needed extra cleaning to get the lead residue out?

Jerry

I was looking at the Saeco catalogue the other day and one of their 60 grain molds said "works well in ARs".

First I've heard of it though.

Jerry, Are you gas checking these at 2000 fps or using them plain base? And what are you using for alloy? RD

RD,

I use Gator Checks on these bullets, and the alloy is an enhanced Lyman #2, 3% more Antimony, I water quench them and then heat treat them. Lino works great for these bullets, but would also need to be water quenched and HT'd, to have these speeds and keep their integrity.

If you are really good at casting and chemistry, some arsenic will make them harder yet.

These CBs can be pushed faster to about 2,200fps, but the accuracy goes down. Above that speed the bullets get unpredictable.

I wonder what they would do at that speed in my 1/7 twist AR barrels?

72,

Your barrel may get a tin plating at these speeds. Next time I cast some up, I can send you a few, but I am not responsible for any damages.

Be warned about the gas system and the need to really clean it after wards.

I learned my lesson on a Match M1A a few years ago. I had to soak it gas piston with carburetor cleaning over night to get the gas piston clean. I think the AR gas system has more problems if it it gets pluged up.
