Since we touched on this subject a little, I thought we could have a thread about bullet lubes.
For Tumble Lube bullets, I use Xlox.
For Maxi/mini Balls, I use various simple lubes
For modern pistol and some rifles, I use Black Magic lube
For modern rifles that are thunder boomers, I use Green Magic lube
Black and Green Magic lubes are two I developed with a lot of research, they leave less mess and burn with almost no smoke. Most of the ingredients you can buy an auto supply store.
But lets hear from all you casters what do you use for bullet lubes?

I use Rooster (red) for my hard lube on smokeless rifle and pistol bullets. I use a heater to warm it up so it flows. It dries hard and stores well.
I use SPG for a soft lube on my black powder cartridge bullets. Good, but messy. I usually lube right before loading. I used this on everything for years before I started the Rooster lube about seven years ago. (That's when I got a Midway heater and an RCBS luber sizer off a fella for twenty bucks!)
And I use a concoction of crisco, bore butter, and parrafin for over the cylinders on my cap and ball pistols. I melt it all together in a tin can. A little of that on the cylinder pin about every twenty or thirty rounds keeps me shooting all day.
And on my wife.....

SPG for BP cartridge loads, Lyman black moly for most rifle loads, and LLA for most handguns. Works for me.

Lube question, I plan on loading black powder loads for 45/70 will the 50/50 lube (Beeswax / Alox) be good enough for black powder? Or should I make a home brew? If so any lube recipies would be appreciated for BP loads.
thanks,
Jeff / Slingshot

I got from another forum, while I was doing research, lube for BP:
Lets stir off a batch:
In the SS 4 quart pot heat the 10 fl ounces of blended
vegetable oils to the point of "just beginning to smoke".
Add the 10 fl ounces bar soap base ( I liquefy mine in a
Pyrex cup in the microwave first - at your own risk there).
Add 2 level tablespoons of the steric acid granules, stir
until dissolved.
Add 35 fl oz Crisco (again, I pre-liquefy in microwave).
Cook for 20 minutes at a moderate heat level. Stir
occasionally.
Reduce heat to "low" because the remaining ingredients are
more fragile. Add 35 fl oz beeswax and 10 fl oz lanolin (I
pre liquefy in microwave with great care – beeswax is highly
flammable!) Cook at low heat for 5 minutes, stirring gently
and constantly.
Cut heat and add soap color dye chips, if desired. Stir
until dissolved/
Let cool until a skim of hardened lube just begins to form.
Add 25 drops peppermint oil and stir to blend.
Pour into your desired molds, containers, or straight into
the lube sizer. Hollow sticks are EZ to cast too. 8 ounce
jelly jars are handy to use because the microwave oven can
be used (at your risk) to liquidate just enough to refill
your lube-sizer with this liquid gold. Keep in mind,
liquefying of solid ingredients in microwave oven may be a
fire hazard. If in doubt, go by dry volume measure and cast
into hollow sticks for your sizer.
This has been an excellent lube for me. Its clean to handle,
it stays put in the lube grooves of bullets. Its fairly
soft, yet does not melt easily. When used with appropriate
bullets for black powder, the fouling stays soft and
cleaning is easy with plain soapy water or other traditional
black powder cleaning agents Enjoy your shooting of real
black powder and be safe!
Pigeonroost Slim: A man's word is his bond.
The 50/50 would probably work
Here is another one:
3 Tbs. each of mineral, castor and "Extra Light Olive" oils
1 ounce (weighed on a powder scale) of finely grated Ivory Soap
14 ounces beeswax
4 Tbs. anhydrous lanolin
The oils were heated together at 300F for about one hour and stirred occasionally. At 300F this blend of oil occasionally gave off a wisp of light smoke. One ounce of finely grated Ivory is about a palm full and I was surprised when all of it melted into a meringue like foam. I took the stuff off the burner and placed a 14 oz. chunk of beeswax in the pan and realized it was going to need more heat in order to melt so I placed the hot plate on low and went away for a few minutes. When I returned the beeswax was only partially melted so I turned up the heat a bit more. Long story short, the concoction didn't become homogenous and thin enough to pour until above 225F which is where I added the 4 Tbs. of lanolin. After which I kept stirring as the temp climbed to 250F which is where I poured it through a piece of cheese cloth into a mayonnaise jar. It appeared there were a few lumps of undissolved Ivory.
After cooling, the lube has about the consistency of silly putty and is nearly as sticky as Javelina with a thick, slick feel to its residue. I just took a sample out of the refrigerator and although it's a bit firmer, after rolling it in my fingers I now have it all over my keyboard. I think it was a success... especially if this stuff's melting point is over 200F!
There are many methods for making BP Lubes for BP cartridge bullets.
Sometimes it's experiment and other times, the store bought stuff works well.

I like lla for smokeless loads.
I also shoot Sagebrush Alox lube with both blackpowder and smokeless loads.
You may want to use a bit of caution about tossing about your Black Magic bullet lube tho. Sidra Bagwell manufacturers and sells Black Magic lube, and pretty good chance that Black Magic is trademarked.

There are several people who use the Black Magic name out there, but Green Magic works better.
Most lubes will work for BP cartridges, the problem is really a simple one, what mess does it leave behind?

Better is in the eyes of the beholder I suppose.
Some folks swear by SPG, it's a pretty good lube, but I've found that Sagebrush Alox to leave a much easier to deal with fouling,in all temperature and humidity conditions. And just as Harlan advertises it it works quite well with both smokeless and bp , just like he designed and tested it to do.
LLA don't work worth a poop with bp, but I do like it with smokeless and have not only used it for my own cast bullets, but have used it to salvage some commercial cast bullets, poorly cast, and really junky lubed.

Ranch 13,
I agree with you. There are some people who believe Johnson Paste Wax is the best bullet lube in the universe. It makes my wooden rifle stock shine, but after trying JPW on some bullets, it is not a lube I would use.

JPW makes for a fine furniture polish but isn't even intend to slide down a gun barrel at the temperatures and pressure from shooting cast bullets.
Might make an addition to a lube recipe but by itself I'm with you

JPW is solvent, Paraffin and Carnuba wax. It will make wood look pretty.
I wouldn't add this to another recipe, I don't use paraffin in my lubes and the solvents can be unpredictable with age in a bullet lube.

I would, at some point like to try some home brew at some point though. At about $5.00 a stick, store bought lube gets pricey if you cast a lot.
