Hello,

I got a bunch of 1 lb. ingots from a friend that his father smelted about 30 years ago. Anyhow when I melt them down in my Lee bottom pour I flux it and I get a rainbow color slick on the top.

Is this oil? and or some other debris in the mix? Right after I flux and clean out the jumk The colors come right back up. Now I melted a bunch down and recast it into ingots and it comes out clean. When I pour it out into the molds it seems the "oil" is left behind.

Any ideas?

thanks,

Slingshot

I have found that also, but it is generally it's a little copper, tin, antimony in the mix. If the rainbow leans torward orange, get rid the lead, you have one of the nasty contaminents in the lead, Cadmium.

Then clean you pot out, plus don't breath the vapors.

If the predominant color is purple turn down your heat, you are oxidizing lead.
