Just received an email from UPS stating that I am about to receive some .376" dia, 255gr GC bullets from Beartooth Bullets..

Can anyone recommend some loads for this bullet? Planned velocity will be between 1800 and 2200fps..

To anyone else but the folks on this forum, it may sound odd that I would like to take this bullet deer hunting this season. Haven't shot a deer with a cast bullet for several years, and would like to show up in camp with something sort of out of the ordinary..

Of course I could take my 8X56 Steyr.... Maybe I'l bring them both.

I fired one of these when I was 14, I will always remember that kick. This was a rifle from my Great Uncle Walter's collection, the man loved his magnum big game guns.

1,800 fps maybe the best you can do without some pressure problem with the rifle, that is depending on when the rifle was made and the condition it is in.

Try SR 4759 at 31 grains or SR 4756 at 23 grains or IMR 4198 at 32 grains or IMR 3031 at 43 grains. Cast bullets are difficult to push much faster in many cases with these magnum cartridges. I would even back off the loads by 10% to give you a better starting point. All of the warnings apply to this advice.

I take it that this is your gopher gun

Jerry, the rifle is an Interarms Whitworth in excellent condition. Gophers, yes, but primarily I use it for maddened field mice, and an occasional vole.. They are pretty ferocious around here..

Thanks for the info....

Your welcome. I figure the smaller the critter, the better you have to be with a big bore.
