I shoot a XP 100, as well as aContender in 221 Fireball plus a couple of 223 rem single shot rifles. For many years I have shoot cast bullets thru those guns with a great deal accuracy.
Never try it out in an AR or an gas operated rifles.
I did find that pistols do shoot extremely well at about 1,700 fps and rifles up to about 2,200 fps.
What have any of you experienced with your guns and this tiny cast bullets?
Jerry

Jerry, I'm ramping up to start casting sometime this winter. I have molds (.223,.243,308,321,.357..50RB) about 80 pounds of pure lead, ingot molds, building my smelting pot to make ingots etc. Need some tin for alloy and a casting pot and I'll be set to go. How about some details on the .223. loads please.
Gas Checked?
Alloy?
Mold number & weight?
Powder and charge?
Thanks, RD

RD,
Gas checked, yes, Hornady or Gator
Alloy, Lino, water quenched and HT's
Lyman mold # 225646 or RCBS 22-055-SP, both are 55 grains and work the best, my 52 grain, 45 grain and 62 grain molds don't shoot as well as the 55 grain in rifles. Size to .224 or .225.
Powder and Charge for 223 Rem in bolt or single shot rifles:
Unique - start 7.0 grains, MAX 9.7
IMR 4227 Start 11.5 grains and MAX 13.7gains
SR-4759 Start 9.0 and MAX 14.5 gains
2400 Start 11.5 grains and MAX 14.0 grains
For my single shot 223 Carbine, the best load is 13.2 grains or 2400, took a G'Hog out at 125 yards give or take a couple of yards.
Hope this helps,
Jerry

If you are gonna get a furance get the lyman Mag 20 its the best on the market. I have used one of the bootom pours for years. ALso FOr the rifles and some pistols, I use mainly Unique, but a little bit, of Blue dot, Green hot, Herco, 2400 and of coarse, imr 4227. those powder will get you out of any situation just fine. Moulded up about 800 rounds of .223 with a lyman mould, strait WW water quinch, with Lyman gas checks. Loaded fifty rounds W/ 55gr. cast bullet over 23 gr. Varget. Fired 40 rounds through Mini-14 no real problems nice group high to the left 10" high 6" left. that was at 75yrds. Fired ten rounds through AR15 again no real problems nice group high to the left, 7" high 5"left. A few keyholed through both guns. Realized I set the bullet too deep. next test will be 60 rounds; 20rd @24gr, 20rd @ 23gr, 20rd @22gr, set the bullet out past first gas ring. all will be fired through the mini 14 because I gave my buddy 100+ bullets to load for his AR. after I get this set I'll try the in the handi-rifle.

Fishin-bum, Is there a typo in your post? I assume you mean 55 Gr bullets with some quantity of Varget. Don't think 55 Gr of Varget would fit in the case. Wondered if you could clear this up. Thanks, Rockydog

I shoot the Lyman 225415. I cast them out of wheel weights and size them to .225" and water quench them.
My first batch I loaded with 6.0 grains of Red Dot/Rex1 but I was getting over 1800 fps which I feel is to fast for wheel weights and pressure seemed pretty high. I reduced the charge to 5.0 grains and it shoots 2 inch groups and velocity is a much more manageble 1600 fps.
I would think that you would bet heavy leading in just a few rounds with 23 or 25 grains of Varget.

RD I gas check those little things and it is a pain in the rear. Little tiny bullet, very small thin gas checks all combine to make my old fingers fumble.
I am looking for one of those $15.00 machines that all you casters have that puts the checks on automatically and is caliber adjustable.
If you come across a used one for less than $10.00 let me know.
