I have a bunch of 85 gr cast lead bullets from a co named Green Bay Bullets.  I have no clue who gave these to me but I have a T/C Encore pistol in .243 and wanted to use up these bullets.  Does anyone have a load I could use for these bullets.  I was thinking of 37.5 gr of IMR4895 but think that is way too high a load for these type of bullets.  I'd like to get something out the bbl around 1500 to 1800 fps or faster.  Any  suggestions???

Thanks

How about IMR4227?  Got any of that?

13.0-15.0gr (18.0gr is max- according to my old manual)  should be a good load in that fps range.....

Scott (welcome aboard) B

Scott, I do have some IMR 4227.  Haven't used it for awhile but Thanks, I'll give it a shot (no pun intended).

I used to load a CB in my 243, it was from the Lyman #245496 mold, WW type of alloy. My loads was with 748, starting at 26 grains with a max of 38 grains. For IMR 4227 my start load was 15 grains and the max was 20 grains.

The 748 powder gave me velocities in 2,500 fps range, that was with 32 grains.

Jerry, I'm not very knowledgeable on cast bullets.  Do gas checks give higher pressures??  I've always loaded my gas checked pistol bullets like they were copper or jacketed bullets and have had some good luck with bear loads up here w/44Mag, 45 colt and 454 Casull.  I always thought rifle cast bullets were supposed to be shot at lower velocities but I know the pistol bullets shoot fine w/higher velocities.  Were your .243 bullets gas checked??  I do have some 748 also.  Thanks

Gas Checks allow for higher pressures, whith in some boundaries, such as keeping the velocity down to 2,200 to 2,500 fps (depending on alloy) you can use close to the book specs for jacketed buillets. That can be a wide margin between jacketed loads and checked CBs with some rounds.

Most of my rifle bullets are gas checked. I use Hornady and Gator checks.

Thanks Jerry, oh one more question, if I use the IMR 4227, I assume you would use a Large pistol primer instead of a rifle primer right??

Thx

I used a Large Rifle primer in all of those, the reason is a simple, check the depth of the primer pocket on cartridges that use LR primers and then check depth of a pistol casing that use a large pistol primers. The pistol primers are shallow compared to the rifle.

i have to agree with jerry ..pistol primers are much softer and different heights , the 243 is a rifle round with rifle pressures not counting specialty pistols ( such as encore contenders moa's etc etc) one will not find very many rifle rounds loaded in a pistol .old block powder rounds perhaps ( btw ? speaking of black powder .... there isnt too many shells that wont function stuffed full of black powder with cast boolits),sadly i havent tried cast in any of my 243's yet ( kinda love the nosler 55 grain bt's and the r-p 100 psp's ) so i cant help ( except to say -never use a pistol primer in a rifle shell-in fact most high -and i mean high-pressure pistol rounds use rifle primers)

Thanks for the 4895 tip.  I had it loaded really hot looks like.  I've since pulled all the bullets w/a bullet puller.

I used Lyman mold's hard cast 85 gr. GC bullets to squirrel hunt with my first .243 some fourty years ago. My 2400 load was predicted to be about 1900/2000 fps (virtually no one had a chronograph back then), don't remember the charge weight. Did use the NRA Alox lube formula tho, it remains the best lead bullet lube I've ever tried.

Anyway, the load virtually duplicated the .22 WMRF with FMJ bullets and was deadly on tree rats. I shot a few through the limbs they were hiding behind, just aimed between the exposed ears. Guess they were a bit surprised!

Here are some loads from my notes circa 1989:

Powder            Start                       MAX

748                   27gr                       38gr

IMR 4227          16gr                       19gr

SR4759             15.5gr                    21gr

H 4895              24gr                       36gr

I cast this bullet out of Lino, used a Hornady GC, sized to .244

The rifle I was using was a Rem 700 BDL, wish I still had it.

All the standard disclaimer go with this information.

Hope this helps,

Jerry
