Balliti-Cast wants $50+/ea. and Magma wants $42+/ea. I was thinking of having a machinist make some for me. I have trouble getting all lube grooves filled at present. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

jerry prolly has the best answer ( as i know he uses a star) i myself have a lyman and a rcbs, that being said ...alot depends on temperature, not sure how hard of lube ur using and cool weather is here, another thing to consider is where the holes are in relation to where the lube squeezes from the reservoir, theoretically speaking it will take the path of least resistance so if u have holes lined up with the reservoir it mite possibly do better with them off set ( possibly) i bought a used sizing die long long ago that some one had altered by drilling/chamfering around the round holes on two sides, i noted it worked better if those holes were away from the reservoir leaving the unaltered holes closest to the reservoir ,just lil thoughts that may or may not apply in ur case
edit for add....
unless buddy buddy deal i doubt that a machinist can or will make them for less , i'd figure the cost of set up alone would be more than one can find them already made ( perhaps not but ...)

The lube melts at 100 deg/F. At this temp. it is like tooth paste. I think it has to do with the number of holes and the placement of same. The dies that I have, have 12 holes. These arranged in groups of four; top, middle and bottom. They are also arranged 90 deg apart.

with that being said have u paid attention to how they are indexed when u put them in ? i had to get a new seal for my old lyman once but u'd note if the excess pressure was bleeding above the piston, i did when i went to put a fresh tube in

If the heat gets too high, the machine leaks in a couple of places and all over the bullet. It is preasurized with my air compressor at 35psi. When the colater is adjusted for the correct bullet, the machine can crank out several hundered per hour. I need to find a source for dies.
E-Bay had some but they seem to auction for more than they are worth. The same holds true for the Magma molds. People will pay $76 each when brand new is $85. Beats the heck out of me.

I have used Lathesmith many times, he is good and really nicely priced. What type of lube are you using? My lube is a higher temp type and I don't have the goo problem unless I turn the temp way up.
I tell most people that a hair dryer is better than some of the heating plates for the Star, I have used my Star going on 20 years now.
If you have any other questions about the Star Sizer just ask.

Hello Jerry,
1. I just sent Lathesmith a note. I will be ordering his dies soon; .40/10, 38/357 and 380.
2. I am using Ballisti-Cast's size machine with Dayton collator, heater and air preasure. The collator is of the same design and manufacture as Magma's with different placement. The lubricant I use is Ballisti-Cast Blue. It flows well at 98 to 100 degrees. At higher temps it gets runny and is real messy. If I get worms or lube ahead of the bullets, I have a sticky mess. I think a harder lube may be less messy in the long run. I know less about the draw backs/down sides of a harder, higher temp lubes.
I was thinking of making my own junk; 195 deg. micro-crystalline wax + Mobile Synthetic Grease for a hard lube similar to HVB (recipe from MountainMolds.com). I am told that I could substitute Lithium grease in this recipe with good results also.
I guess I'm just another ballistition looking for his lab!
3. Any thoughts on a Cowboy action bullet; .45-160gr-rnfp. I would like one that would collate. Magma has one that will not collate, Ballisi-Cast is to heavey and NEI's my not have the cowboy look. I feel I have had little to no luck in my search. I suspect, I must choose one and stuff them in a PVC tube by hand. Invert and insert the tube into my sizing machine and let it run.
Yours, Harvey
