Im looking for my new reloading project and I think this is it. I would like data for a 300 gr. .50 slug in this sabot. If its a 3" load thats even better. Hunting seasons over so Im free to load. Roll crimp is prefered.
One issue, I dont see them being sold anymore. Is it just out of stock?

I've heard good and bad results. I just like how I can make $8 sabot slugs (per 5) at the same velocity as a box of sabot slugs costing $15

From the bullet I'm assuming they were made by Hornady??? Stock number or anything to search by? More than happy to look for you if I know what I'm looking for. RD

The FTX is designed for medium sized game (as in whitetails) at high velocity's (as in 1900 FPS). If I can get this to group well It will demolish deer. One of this bullets main features is its tip. 1 It gives it a high BC, 2 it has reliable expansion, even on thick bone. It is the ultimate bullet for deer hunting, I just need to get it in a sabot.

I'm sure I can look around, my main issue is I don't want to pay $16 for a book I only need 1/2 a page out of.

I have been putting out buying that slug manual, but will probably order it later this winter or next spring. Sometimes we have to pay for a key piece of information that comes along with a lot "extra noise".

I found the sabot
http://www.midwayusa.com/Search/#bls%20sabot____-_1-2-4_8-16-32
back ordered
BPI is now open on Saturdays so I'll swing by and buy one sometime. Are these sabots worth it, Accuracy, load data, and velocity?

I sent Joe at BPI a note about if they had any and when would the back order would be filled.
Loading data is important for such a load, I am planning on buying some brass 12g shells, 3 inch, for developing loads for my Mossberg bolt action shotgun.
I was wondering if anyone had loaded these all brass hulls on a standard MEC 600 Jr or did they buy the reloading kit from Rocky Mountain Cartridge? The RMC loading kit look like a Lee Classic Loader.

Take the sizing ring off the 600jr, should work OK.

As I mentioned, I emailed Joe at BPI about the Sabots and here is his reply:
Jerry,
The BLS is our sabot, we are currently in the process of redesigning it however. We are trying to improve on it in some areas in order to provide a superior sabot. I believe they are still about a month or more away from being available.
Thank you,
Joe Gramling

Here is an idea using these Sabot, using either a strong hull or one of the brass hulls, put a bullet meant for a 50BMG round in the sabot and then load it in to the hull.
The 50 BMG bullets I have are 750 grains in weight, so they are not too heavy.
The powder load would be interesting for this combination.
And ideas or suggestions?
Jerry

I think the sabots need to have the gaps between the petals gotten rid of. I'm not sure if it is an issue but I would imagine the gaps are only good for letting the sabot twist in bad ways killing accuracy. That and they need to have a layer of harder plastic in the bottom. I have heard the slugs can sometimes sink in to this plastic bottom. Other than that they just need more data, from what I've seen they are only 50-100 fps slower than factory loads and almost the same accuracy. .50 BMG in a sabot? I don't see why it wouldn't work. I only see them as being a good target load. Too little expansion for hunting, and too much penetration for home defense. Maybe elephant hunting?

Jerry. I bet if you PM Ed Hubel he'll give you a load or two. RD

Guys,
I have a bag full of pulled 50 cals at the moment. I can buy better bullets, but If I leave a 50 cal embeded into something on my land, maybe some tresspassing hunters will notice the bullet sticking out of a tree or blown thru it and my signs that say, "If You Are Reading this, Your In My Range" will get the word out.

Jerry, Something you might want to consider.. There was a court case where someone had posted a "Security by Smith and Wesson sign" and then shot someone attempting to break into his home. This caused a huge flap and he was forced to defend his right to self protection as the law tried to argue that he was predisposed to shooting first and asking questions later. IIRC he was successful in his defense but the defense would never have been needed if not for the sign. No tresspass signs will work for most folks and you shouldn't give up the tactical advantage of surprize to those who don't pay attention. Remember the scene in Crocodile Dundee when the street gang pulls a switchblade and he pulls out the 12" Bowie? That's tactical surprize. RD

Nova, I think the slits are needed to release the sabot from the bullet. Once they start down the barrel I think any torque or twist on them would stay consistent. You can only wind them so tight and once they reach that point the pressure behind them just keeps inceasing until they exit the barrel. Rockydog
