The next three posts will be my target files designed by myself and found to work rather well. I spent years as a range master and designed the targets based on real world usage not some printers idea about a shooters need. These were designed using the MS Word program, but the attachment setup for the site will not allow .doc files, so I converted the files to .jpg files using Acrobat.

The first file is a big bore scope target. The way it is used is to align the verticle and horizontal cross hairs just off the square, alowing a very thin hairline crack of light between the cross hairs and the corner of the square. Upper left quadrant to lower right corner, etc. The alignment prevents canting and gives a sub .10 inch hold. The square is 2 inches, the grid is 1 inch and at 100 yards is very visable for sight adjustments. I have found a 12x or better power setting works best.

Best,

Ed

This is the red dot target that I designed. Set the target up at a distance where the dot just fits inside the ring with a hair of light between the dot and the ring. My dot sights fit this description at 50 meters. Your eye will center the dot in the double ring every time and you can shoot fine groups with this target and a red dot. The cross hair on the target is intended to help you reduce canting.

Best,

Ed

This is the fine multiple target sheet. Used just like the first target but intended for high powered scopes ar small bore sight in with a scope at shorter distances.

Best,

Ed

I bought a CD that has many good targets on it. The ones I use for sighting a rifle or pistol are on the CD. It was something like $17.99 for it.

Here is a listing at Midway:

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=475406

I paid $14.95 for mine, but that was a while ago.

I just take regular printing paper and a magic marker. center a cross hair with a one inch dot in the middle. this is then stapled to a card board, corn flake box, 24 pack coke trays, etc. Then tack to the ply target frame.:thumbs:smacks

I hate spending money on plywood, so I cobbed up a frame from furring and staple a sheet of cardboard in the open area. Tape or staple the target to the cardboard and blast away. Cardboard is free at the grocery store.

I also make my own targets. 1" horizontal and vertical lines and instead of squares I use diamonds. Then line the cross wire's up with each point of the diamond. Make several different ones, one bull, two bulls, three bulls and five bulls. Space under each mutiple bull I write the chg weight of that load. I don't care for the factory made ones either.

These are scrap strips only 3 or 4 inches wide. spaced close enough to tack the card board on. A bullet seldom hits the ply board.:thumbs:smacks

I love printing out my own targets. Saves a lot of money compared to buying them. Though right now Midway has a great deal on 5" shoot and see type targets, 50 for $6.95. I'm enjoying using those for pistol shooting.

I've also found that people who don't shoot a lot leave practically brand new, expensive shoot and sees on the silhouettes at the range. If they put a couple holes in it, a pasty or a black marker takes care of the hole, and presto, free targets.

I keep most my shot up targets and flatten the holes on the back, tape over the holes and black magic marker where needed on the front.

i love interactive targets best ! gallon antifreeze jugs full of water are fun( one shot all gone but lolz) !blue rock on the dirtbank is fun with pistols,to get aligned i like the grid pattern best 1" bull 5" total, after that i dont care for alot of paper, got some old tin once ,still had a few roofing nails stuck in it , stood up on end those are fair targets at 100 yards, i like ed's red dot target tho +1, i do shoot a bit of plywood too tho , i get alot of scraps from time to time(look at my bench foto lolz iz all scrap plywood n packin crate stuff)it works for a backer, cardboard is better, old campaign signs work wundabar !( now ya know what i thought of...)the better ones soak up alot of hits too ! at a pistol range i like the smurf target that doesnt exactly get spit out of my printer [dratz] a couple of old wood broomstick type sharpened stakes a staple gun sum cardboard tape and targets and ur good to go , u can make a top bar if desired just drill two half holes however far apart u want ur stakes in a 2x2(3x3 2x4) and u also use it to push it in the dirt( unless it's like cement)it's light and portable( unless u have to add the hammer or hand drill for the concrete lolz) printers have indeed helped us tho !!

I designed my own target for sighting in my rifles. It is a black 2.5" square with a 1.0" white square in the center. There is a + sign dead center in the white portion of the squaree and + signs one and two inches below the cenral one (+signs in the black area are white) and four + signs one inch apart going up the target. I use one of the corners of the target as my aiming point and sight in to hit 3.0" high at 100 yards. With a tight grouping rilfe, one can shoot four groups easily on one target. With most of my rifles I can just about always get two groups and with a few, a full four groups.

I made up a master copy and go to a place like AlphaGraphics or Instyprints and have 500 copies made at one time. Instyprints is the more expensive of the two at $32 for 500 targets. The last time I had some run up, I had other work they didn't want to tackle, so I went ot AlphaGraphics and they did the targets for $17.00 and change plus the other work I needed done.

The other work was make a printed copy from a CD book i got from the cast Bullet Association. In their house magazine, they gave writter permission that a printed copy as allowable for personal use. Instyprints didn't want to do it so they've permanently lost my business.

I've been trying to decide if I should do a redesign to shoot at longer ranges, say twice the size. That square gets awfully hard to see at 200 yards with my antique eyeballs. Anyway, it's a target that has served me well for over 30 years. Like Murphy's second law says, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
