I have looked a bit and have not found a thread quite like what I am going to ask.

I have a Ruger Red Hawk in 44 mag. I used to love to shoot it with full loads and reduced. I also used to reload for it back in my previous life.

I lost some of my reloading stuff including a bunch of notes. I do know I loaded a 180 gr jacketed bullet to a light load and it was fun to shoot. I am afraid that the RA in my fingers and wrists won't allow me to shoot anything with much recoil. I would like to get my son shooting it also.

So, what does anyone have for a light recoil load. It can be cast or jacketed. Just looking for something that is reasonable to load and shoot at paper.

Thanks for the help and have a good 'un, Guy

Guy, you might try Trail Boss.. Works well for me in .44 Mag cast loads. Hodgdon has it on their website, I believe.

ok u can hate me for this but .... for the absolute ultimate recoil reduction and low cost ...gotta hand it to speer and their plastic bullets and case no powder needed just primers ( and they cut the prettiest holes ( even thru 1/2" sheetrock )the hodgdon cowboy action data is where i derived my lite loads from and i also confess to shooting a bunch of 44 specials in it ( and not the load that kieth used to make the 44 mag ) speer used to list a single round ball load and i believe atone time lyman did as well
.433 round ball
3.6 unique appox 566 fps
2.9 bullseye appoz549 fps
3.4 231 appox 554 fps
them's from speer #11 out of a 10" dan wesson 44 mag,u'll be hard pressed to get lighter than that

I load 6.8 grains of Unique under a 240 Gold Dot in 44 spl brass for my 12 year old to shoot in my 4" 44 mag Redhawk, he says it's a comfortable, easy for him to handle load.

Just be sure to clean the cylinders real well before switching back to 44 mag rounds, if you go this route.

I use either 8g unique in 44spl cases or 9 in mag cases with 200gr laser cast bullets.

There is a light weight, about 200 grain WC mold that Lee once produced and I think Lyman also made a 44 Mold in the same weight class also a WC mold.

I have a Lee 44 WC mold on my casting bench, once in a while I cast up a few, they make really great paper punching rounds for the 44 Mag.

The problem these days is to order a mold it takes forever to receive it.

But if you want to use just any cast bullet in this group of bullet weights, 205, 215, 232, 9 grains of Unique works well for a starting point.

Have fun,

Jerry

The .44 Russian case can also be used, for less recoil than the .44 special. I made my own by trimming .44 spec. to the correct length.Lighter charges will burn more efficiently in the shorter cases.

Just as everyone else says, moderate load of Unique works fine. I run about 8.5/9 grains under a 240 grain swaged or cast bullet.

3006 user....Thanks..never tried that powder...I will look in to it.

cedarswamp1... Thanks...a little like shooting the 38's in the 357....

Black-tailed Bandit Thanks...I would like to stay with the mag cases.....as that is what I have.

Jerry...as always...good info...Thanks.

Waderman...where did you get your mold, if I might ask....and Thanks

swampshooter...Thanks....I wondered about the case length....I have hundreds of mag cases so I wanted to stick with them if possible.

Charley...Unique seems to be the powder most are looking at and I do have that. thanks.

Now Fryboy......I didn't know Speer still offered the plastic cases and bullets....I learned a good lesson with those buggers many years back...Went to Portland (60 miles away) "shopping" with the wife and her brother. Back then Woolworth had a store in the Mall and had a pretty good shooting section. It included some reloading supplies. I saw the Speer plastic setup for 38/357 and thought it would be cool. soooooo....I bought some.

After we got home my brother in law and I were playing with them in the living room and set a few of them up to get ready to try them outside.

Well...the wife was in the kitchen unpacking some things and set a huge box of Rice Crispies on the kitchen table (about 25 feet away from me and my brother in law sitting on the couch.....

Well...let me tell you.....I pulled up my little S&W and zeroed right in on that little Rice Crispie guy on that box and pulled the trigger.......maybe that is one of the reasons she is now my EX.....that plastic bullet with just the primer blew a hell of a hole in that box....it spread Rice Crispies all over the kitchen and what a scream from the wife......we thought it was a riot......but she totally lost her sense of humor......so I will stay away from the plastic......not sure the current misses would enjoy it any more than the ex did.........LOL and Thanks for the info...

In the early 80's when I was laid off,my house burnt down.I only lost 2 guns and my replacement was a SBH.The first year I owned it I cast and shot 90 lbs of straight WW in front of 7gr WW231 in 44 mag cases.I started with a 240 gr gcswc and ended up using a 200 gr flat base.Shot lots of small game with it too.Rather than use shorter cases, use the mag cases and play with deep seating.Low recoil in a revolver with a fast powder wont need a heavy crimp

A very accurate load is the Lyman 215 SWC w GC over 8 grs of 700x. It will shoot a clover leaf at 25 yards all day long, with a nice push recoil.

Best,

Ed
