Charley,
Up here in the hills, we do wear heavier clothing because the weather is getting colder. If some perp is wear winter quality Carharts, I won't worry about the bullets traveling thru the perp and hitting something else, but I never worried about any way.

I do not change mine, my .45 loading will go thru clothing just fine.
A recently studied phenomena that you may not be aware of is the finding that, JHP don't expand much in winter, because they seem to "clog up" with small circles of clothing/padding" before they strike the body. HP's are expanded by hydraulic force, liquid inside the cavity flexing the lead outward. JHP's in winter tend to become FMJ's, effectively (all the more reason I like a large bullet).

At 5 feet almost all the 38 Spl thru 45 ACP ammo I have seen will be fatal if you have a heart shot or a head shot.

I like the 38 special as a light handgun, light recoil light weight and quite accurate. I would feel secure enough with it as my minimum handgun. You can even fire it without ear plugs and be able to hear afterwards:) Besides 38s i favor 44 and 45 cal revolvers.

I just have a light weight model 10 smith with a 5 inch barrel, i shoot mostly lead cast smwc but occasionally jacketed rounds that are a tad more potent. I dont usually shoot +Ps in it though. Its a nice easy shootin pistol.

I am not sure if the M10s were designed to shoot +P, maybe one of gun historians would know. I have owned 3 Model 10s over the years, but I can't carry revolver with a 5 inch barrel concealed unless it's winter time. Just like me trying to carry a 1911, it is just too big for me to carry concealed.

some are ok to use Plus P but some early ones arent. The cutoff year is highly debated it seems, but appears to be a common opinion that mod 10s made after the mid 60s or so are safe. Some say if it has a model 10-5 or whatever in the crane and 3 (i think) screws in the frame that its new enough to be safe. Its a debate depending on who you ask. Newer ones are safe...but when that starts if someone knows feel free to give a input on it. Also soom say that if it says 38 S W Special Ctg on the side of the barrel it is safe. Like i said i have never seen any of this in a actual for sure fact form but they all seem to be in consenses that those made late 60s, 70s for sure should be safe best i can tell. I got a call from the Sheriff's office today that my conceal permit is done. Going to pick it up tomorrow! 
Unfortunately I haven't found a 38 +P load available in town that I like, and I'm tired of wasting gas driving around and looking. Best I can find is 110gr Corbon or Hydrashok...

I like the HydraShoks because I can find them and they are an old reliable ammo that seems to work everytime.
I would prefer Winchester Rangers.

Barn Doors don't give a darn what the calander pages are reading. Being a big guy has its advantages, like being able to carry the same .45 1911A1 all year.

Thanks, it's quite a good feeling.
I tried out some 230gr +P Win Rangers today for my carry load. Recoil was absolutely brutal from my 3" 1911, my wrist still hurts a little. Ejection was impressive, I tried to save the nickel cases and found most of them about a mile away, but two are entering orbit right about now. On the plus side they were very accurate, feed perfectly, and would deliver about 400 ft lbs on target. 
Going to look for some 38 spl +P again today, if not luck I'll order online.

That sounds like mine out of my 3.6" Witness Compact Polymer.
As the magazine empties, the recoil gets more and more "brisk". ;) Darned pistol only weighs 26 oz. empty.

Very light concealable pistols are brutal to shoot, but remember that the perp on the business end will get it worse than you.

My minimum carry would be a 38 special with either HydroShoks or Golden Sabers. Prefered carry would be 1911 w/ HydroShoks or Golden Sabers, or S&W Mod 19 w/2 1/2" barrel and 357's in HydroShoks or Golden Sabers.

I read today that a 357 load of a 125gr SJHP at 1400fps is the gold standard for stopping power, or at least it was during it's day. I wonder how this load in a 38spl +P variant would work.

D-88, you could google up Marshall and Sanow's work on stopping power, not recent but oft quoted. If I had a link, I'd post it. I'd bet a mason jar full of your fave that load is given.
