My brother called the other day and asked if I would hold/care for a pistol he has. He tells me it's a stainless steel Tarus automatic in .44 magnum caliber. I have checked a number of web sites and have yet to find any Taurus ,44 mag automatics, does anybody know what model this could be? Thanks Bill190

Bill190,I see this is your first post.Welcome to the world of handloadin nuts.I think maybe he got a bit confused on the details but a 44 auto would be an interestin thing to have.When you find out fer sure,let us know.

The only autoloader .44 I am aware of, is the old Automag, and I Taurus didn't make it. The company was Auto Mag.
A bit of looking reminded me that Desert Eagle chambered a .44 Magnum, made by Magnum Research. That one is fairly new, the Automag is from '70 to '75 according to my book.
It was a true rimless auto round, used cut down .308 brass. :) I think the DE uses standard .44 Rem. Mag.

A company called AMT made the later Automags, Automag II in .22WMR, Automag III in .30 Carbine and Automag IV in .45WInMag.
The totally different original Harry Sanford designed Automag (Marketed by TDE) used it's own proprietary loads - .25JMP, .357JMP and .44AMP, made from modified .308Win cases.
Then there was the Wildey .45WinMag gas-operated pistol.
To my knowledge, Taurus never made anything similar to these.

In the late 70's or very early 80's some fella came up with a rotary bolt 44 mag autoloader.Had to be gas op I think.It sounded very promising.There was a write up in shooting times,G&A or something like that.Never heard of it since.

an automag .44amp
i have the iai / amt automag III (9mmwinmag), IV (.45winmag) and V (.50ae).
would like to have one of the above handguns in the collection but at the premium they're demanding nowdays, i doubt i ever will.
a wildey in .475wildey is another one of those strange semi-auto items that's appealed to me along with this bunch.
on the topic, i also don't believe that taurus is making a semiauto in .44remmag. now a revolver, of course. i love mine dearly. but a semiauto ... never heard of such a creature.

a few years ago i saw a add for a 44 semi auto that wasnt one of the automags ..it was one ugly dude , the add was in shotgun news,if i could find it i'd share it from the lack of publicity since i'd wager that it wasnt a hit ,all the wiki says ...
" The .44 Magnum was an immediate success, and the direct descendants of the S&W Model 29 and the .44 Magnum Ruger Blackhawks are still in production, and have been joined by numerous other makes and models of .44 Magnum revolvers and even a few semi-automatic pistols, the first being the gas operated Desert Eagle pistol in 1982."
seems to me that i remember the one i saw in the add( in addition to being ugly) was made by a spanish or south american company ( same diff IMO )it had some kind of ungodly looking muzzle break on it and didnt look too practical... found it ..i was wrong it was made in italy and so far the ones i find online the foto's do not have the muzzle break i saw in the add( so far )

Wiki is wrong - the original Automag and the Wildey both predated the Desert Eagle by a number of years.
I once had the opportunity to purchase an Automag in .44AMP back in the late 70's - wish I had! It was only $500, but I was a young Airman not making much money then.

I've owned both the 357 automag, and a couple 44 automags. They are now long gone, and i'm still waving goodby to them!!
I made my own cases and ammo for them, and still have all the die sets to do so... IMO they were terds!
When i comes to a magnum 44, make mine a S&W M-29 please!
