I have in the process of find a good load for my 270 win Marlin XL7. I'm a novice at reloading, so I'm still learning. I chose 110gr. TSX bullets for the deer around here, we have blacktail deer in my area and they don't get that big. Also want I to mention in the area I hunt we have to use lead free bullets for the cute Condors.

So far I settled on 57grs. of Reloader 17. See targets below and let me know what you think. It seems to me that the bullet likes to be closer to the lands. I spoke to Ty at Barnes and he recommend to start .050" off the lands.

.050" off lands

.030 & .040"

.060" / 2 bullets through one hole

.070"

I think my next load will be .020" & .025" off the lands as the .030" is good enough for hunting, But I need to back up the .030" to make sure. Just being picky. Any suggestions?

Trailrider, it looks like you found what your looking for with .030-.033 off the lands.

How many groups did you shoot? I've had rifles shoot like that and the next group would be 1.5"

Not trying to discourage you, but you need to know if the load is consistant.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck and keep shooting.

trailrider, Just wondered what your reasoning was in going with the 110 gr? As I type this I realized that the 110 TSX is probably about the same dimensions as a 130 or 140 Gr. conventional cup and core bullet. I use the 130 gr. Interlocks in my .270 Savage with great accuracy. I have a couple of boxes of 90 and 110 Gr. conventional HP but they look pretty stubby. I've never tried them.

GottaGetaGlock,

I have three groups that are consistent on differnet days and temp. I know what you mean about a good handload one day, then the next time its different.

Starting to enjoy this 270 marlin, going to test the load out to 200 & 300 yards next.

Rockydog,
I spoke to Ty at Barnes and he recommended that I try the 110 gr Tsx. He said they perform like 130gr lead bullets. I took his advise and tried the 110 gr.. I can't wait to shoot some game now to see how they perform.

Thanks guys

Trailrider, for a novice you are doing quite well. Sounds like that Marlin is a keeper. Good luck hunting, and shoot straight.
