I was just offered a like new Rem 700 XCR in 338 ultra mag from a very good friend of mine for 600 bucks including rings and bases. The rifle has 18 rounds through it of which 10 I shot this past spring. He is in a bit of a pinch and is selling off quite a few of his unused toys. The only thing I can think that it would be good for is Elk in the Rockies where longer shots are common and more horsepower than 300 win mag makes more sense. I do not have anything in 338 currently so that makes it attractive also the price is right and I would be helping out one of my pal's, plus it is something new to play with and reload for. So what do you fellows think? I am guessing That I can load it down so I can shoot it off the bench without busting my shoulder back up or I can get a break put on it. Ok guys convince me that the grief that I will experience here at home after I said I was good for the rest of the year for shooting stuff is worth it.

I do have some fun money squirrelled away that is mine all mine  perhaps if it is in the safe for a while it might not get noticed? Or do I use the helping out a friend angle and be strait up?

Buy It NOW!

If I ask Katie if I want to buy something, she just says, if we have the need and the money, go ahead and get it.

Congrats, now locate a good Chiropractor and an orthopedic surgeon.:wink:            Considering I suffered for 2 years with a bum shoulder and got it fixed this past spring there is a brake in the not too distant future for this thumper. It is a bit funny though it was the last rifle I shot before the shoulder work. I figured what the hell it ain't going to matter in a couple of weeks anyway so why not. Yes it beat the hell out of me but it did not matter too much. Now that I am doing excellent without pain I do not want to screw up a good thing     plugs and muffs at the range and Game ears in the field. Now I just have to get " big willy home"  unsuspected and undetected.

I put on the Remington R3 Recoil Pad on mine and also wear a Past Super Mag Recoil Shoulder Pad when I shoot from the bench. For ear protection I double up when shooting at the bench (foam plugs, then muffs on top). While hunting I just let it ride as is.

And it is good for more than Elk. It will knock those deer down too

I highly suggest a Limb Saver for the Ultra Mag.

Try googling Limb Saver or check with Midway or Cabela or some of the other bib box stores. They do work and many people swear by them, instead of at the gun.

Limbsaver is who makes the Remington one that I have. It is soft and cushy and works well.

I have been a limbsaver guy for a while now I have them on my skatter guns that shoot them super hard kicking super fast steel shot. I also have them on my hard kicking rifles and I do like them a bunch. And in that end I have some mule deer to hang and get skinned filled my tags this weekend with out too much trouble and my buddy got his bull moose today as well, so once we get all the work done and everything cut packed and frozen I will take the shoulder mounted artillery out to the range and see just what I am going to have to do to tame her down.

OldStuffer,

I shoot some pretty powerful rifles, from my 300 RUM up to my 600 NE. They all have some kind of limb saver on them. I have a couple of the Pachmayr ones, they work almost as good as the Limb Saver, but not enough for a couple of my bigger thunder boomers.

When I shoot for most things on my land, you never know which rifle I am going to use, some times it is adequate and other times it is gross over kill. If I want to save the meat to eat, I use more reasonable rifles, but Mr Coyote had better look out, an Ultra Mag can turn him inside out and not even slow down.
