Hi Countrboy,
I have both Lotts and 450 Ackleys. I would recommend the Ackley. I sure love mine. Ideally you should look for a used 458 Win mag. in a cz550 rifle. Then all you have to do is rechamber and you are on your way. The cz550 is the best buy I know of. I have bought used cz's on the internet. There are several gun web sites to brouse. Some times the right rifle pops right up and other times you have to be patient. If you buy one of these, be sure you bed the action before you shoot it. I had one on a hunting trip in Africa that split from the forarm clean through the action wood. What a strange feeling. Fortunately it happened at the end of my hunt.
If you use a standard mauser action much modification in needed. This is quite costly.
Just my 2 cents.

Good advise, as the CZ is indeed the good buy in big bore rifles. But, if you do not find what you want, take a look at the Montana Rifle Company (montanarifleman.com) site for a 1999 action. They sell barreled actions set up for the 458 Lott. They might also chamber for the 450 Ackley.
The 1999 action is a pre 64 M-70 with a one piece triggerguard and a 98 Mauser style barrel mounting system, without the cone. It has the M-70 safety and trigger.
I built 3 rifles on their action and all are fine rifles, function and accuracy.
Best,
Ed

I like the 458 Win Mag for a basic action to build upon, I have never worked with the cz550. I may have to look into them.
Thanks,
Jerry

Hi Jerry,
Ed brings an interesting alternative to you pondering. The Montana built action is a dandy indeed. I am building three 500 Jefferies on this action (may have a little feeding problem to deal with). They truly are beautiful actions. Delivery has been a little slow, but they may be caught up by now. You will spend a little more money, but again your finished project would be fantastic.
The cz550 is very strong and usually sports a set trigger. I really like this feature when shooting from a bench. The action is a little crude, but with a little hand work can be made glass smooth. Once again, your finished project would be fantastic. It's always nice to know you have good alternatives. I will also say that the barrel on the cz550's are very good from the accuracy stand point. If you ever have to remove one of these barrels prepare yourself for a good tug, because they are tight.
Regards,
Glenn
For what it's worth, I have had patterns made for both the cz550 and the Montana actions for semi inleted stocks for my custom rifles. I can provide this mans name etc. if you are interested

Jerry. My hunting buddy in Nevada has a few rifles on the CZ and from what i'm hearing, he won't buy anything else now. He says the only drawback, minor to him BYW, is that they're quite heavy. IIRC, I think he has rifles in 25-06, .300 Win. mag. and a .375 H&H. He says accuracy is superb from his rifles.
Me? I prefer rifles that don't break my 71 year old arches down anymore. I'll leave those to the younger dudes.

Paul,
I have good arches in my boots, and wear a back brace when I go out hunting.
Glenn,
I am looking into buying a CZ550 Action or rifle to build a rifle on, it may have to wait until after Christmas, have to get a lot of gifts for the grand kids.
Jerry

Jerry,
You did not mention a wife. If you have one, a nice cz550 wrapped with a nice 458 ribbon would look good under the tree.
