I was looking outside and a deer had been hit as the truck just went on. I went up to the deer, a young buck and it was still alive, but suffering badly. So I went back and got my shotgun, then went out to put it out of it's misery.
If anyone hits a deer and it doesn't get back up, they should at least call the sheriff or the police.
Before pulling the trigger, I apologized to the deer. The state highway department is coming out to get the carcase. He was badly mangled.

Whitetails are like flies around much of south Texas, you have to be very careful driving the back roads, and even major highways. Hitting a deer at 30 MPH is one thing, hitting them at 70-80 MPH isn't going to be good for the driver.

Charley,
I live on a major highway thru the hilly areas of Ohio. It is nothing to see trucks going 65 around here. Bow season is upon us, but it is still a shame that this buck had to pass in this fashion.

we call it venocide ... i seen many of them hit it's always a bummer ( and a waste ) i havent ever hit one but only because i pay attention and i know that where i am the times and places i have to look out for them the most ..like now when the rut is on as well as hunting pressure eh makes great dogfood and/or coyote bait

We live in the country of southern NC and they are so bad that I only travel 45 once I leave the main highways. One had better keep a keen "eye pealed" or he will have a major auto repair bill. We have totaled one car and damaged four others or rather the deer have. LOL, my wife is a much better "deer hunter" than I but of course she drives like a maniac on steroids all the time-day and night. That is the reason the front of the car has not been repaired. Just got tired of repairing/replacing fenders, grills, and hoods. wc

I have to drive very careful at nite not only for deer but horses to. A horse not only totals your vehicle but is as likey that it will go thru the windsheild and in your lap. Ive never hit either one though ever knock on wood. Short of hitting a horse in the jaw with my passenger side mirror as he stepped out of the ditch going about 40-45. My daughter lost our passenger side mirror while visiting from college to one of the varmits. They really are a pest around here. Probably a dozen have been hit within a mile of our home in the past few years. Have finished off a couple injured deer just off our driveway. wc

We have them hit many times during the cooler seasons, but a lot of people, myself included have Deer Whistle on my van, They work.
My grip about this situation is leaving a wounded animal to suffer.

boy i wish you fellows could send some of those surplus whitetails up to vermont we could always use a couple more. Moose is a bigger problem up here can't seem to train them to look both ways before they cross. And Jerry i here you on the hit and don't cheak. Just sicken for people to do that.We somtimes forget we moved into their backyard

In kansas we can get a salvage tag from the warden and even the deputy.One I hit,the deputy came out and didnt have a tag with him.He told me to take it home and the warden came out later and gave me one.I have a special process to salvage a deer that has been hit on the road. Split the hide down the spine and peel it down the shoulders.If they are bruised up I go on down to the hind quarters.Whatever is good I salvage,otherwise my dogs love me. wheezen I have salvaged a few road kills myself. you know 30 years ago when a prime coon was worth 35 to 40 dollars you never saw a roadkill go to waste this time of year. I run a municiple road dept last week we burried two medium sized coons and one large beaver that were killed in the road. May not have been a whitetail but still what a waste.
