I am very sorry to here of your lose! I read through this post back in January when I was thinking of quiting. I had this post marked and thought I would add to it and seen your bad news. I remember your post from September. It made me think even more why I wanted to quit. I'll have you know that I have not had a cigarette since January 31st. I am currently on a medicine called Chantix. It is working very well. Thanks for your post. God Bless

Robert, thank you for your sentiment. As to your quitting, good for you, stick with it. Sounds like you are a religious person--your faith will be a big help also. I won't say good luck, because in most cases we make our own luck, but you seem determined, and that's the big part.

I was a heavy smoker until from 1952 until 1964 then I quit for good. During medical exams I'm always asked if I have ever smoked when I said yes they would chart it then I got curious and asked why they keep asking ,I was told smokers have a high incidence for bladder cancer & then I was scheduled for a urology appointment.The urologist said I was going to have a cystocopy to check my urethra & bladder, talk about a painful exam that's one to remember. im alot like you when it comes to a gaggle of smokers too bad about the loss of that good job... i have an old friend i like really well.. him and his wife are both friends of mine but they both smoked and were getting hard to be around.. i told his wife how bad it smelled and told her i could tell what house people were smoking in from the curb in front of the house.. she didn't believe it.. then i told my friend he could save so much money if he didn't buy cigs every day (i knew he was tight)... wasn't two mos later and the wife said to her hubby i'm going to quit and i strongly suggest you do too.. they were hypnotised and never smoked since.. about a month after they quit the wife admitted she could smell the houses of smokers from the street... Hello friends. I am nearly 30 years old and have been using one form of tobacco or another since I was 13. This discussion caught my interest because of my own love/hate relationship with the stuff.
Presently I am nearly tobacco free, I buy a pack of smokes about once every 30-40 days. I smoke them and remember the reasons why I quit in the first place (coughing up stuff, out of breath, smelly clothes). I have been in this state for about 2 years now. I have come to realize that my former high stress job as a dealership auto mechanic foiled all my previous attempts to quit. I have transitioned to a peaceful, orderly office job and no longer get angry and frustrated on a daily basis. I no longer crave tobacco, when I buy my occasional pack of smokes its because I honestly enjoy smoking and wish to revisit it.
When I was a daily tobacco user my favorites were cigarettes and snuff. Although snuff gives you way more nicotine than cigarettes I always found that cigarettes were alot harder to do without. I would smoke for a few months, then switch to snuff, then back to cigarettes after a few more months. I never got into cigars or pipes much although I have tried both of them more than a few times. They're just not convenient in a world where you can't smoke indoors because you can step outside to suck down a cigarette in a minute or so to get your fix, but even a small cigar or bowl of pipe tobacco takes a good 20-30 minutes to smoke. Most people don't mind if you dip or chew indoors as long as you're discreet about it.
I suppose I am on the long road to parting ways with tobacco for good. I have known many folks who have tried to quit tobacco multiple times. It seems the common denominator with all of them is that staying off tobacco is not terribly difficult until the stress and anxiety hits. Then they go right back to it. If I had not gotten out of the car business I would still be using tobacco every day. If you can eliminate sources of stress or at least find other coping mechanisms your ability to quit will be alot stronger. Just my experiences. Peace out, Lance.

Lance, this last paragraph hits the nail on the head, I believe. In my late wife's case her stress was 20+ years of extreme pain. You are on the right road, I am sure.

I would like to keep this post going and add that I think I should be considered a non-smoker now! It has been since January 31, 2008. I don't think it would be hard to pick it up again, except I don't want anything to do with them. They do not fit in to a hunter or reloaders life. I have seen too many loved ones die of the big C. How can you be stealth if you stink? I can smell smokers hundreds of feet away now. It makes it a whole lot harder to be in the high country just scouting around let alone get a critter. I went hunting at around 11,000 feet for Elk. I thought since I had quit for 9-10 months I would do just fine. I got my butt kicked. I got real tired! I'm 44 Weigh 210 (getting lighter) and do ranch work at 7200 feet all the time. I had smoked since I was 17. My buddy was two years younger an does what I do 300ft lower then I am. Next year on the mountain is going to be a whole lot better! If any thing else I have more money to spend on reloading. I don't loose reloading time because I had to have a smoke. And I'm not stressed when I am some where that I can't smoke wondering when I am getting my next smoke. (like a plane or office) And have you ever been on a trip and get stuck paying $6 or $8 a pack because you were out and you had to have a smoke? That won't ever happen again either!

happy st patty's day to you tiptop...... my daughter in law is adicted to smoking still but my son did stop and makes her go outside the the house to smoke so the kids won't be exposed to it... they have 4 of my grandkids there and i'd hate to see them start that stupid sh!t.......... my oldest grandaughter is 13 and absolutely hates it her mom still smokes...... i have never been addicted to anything (but sex)  so i really don't know anything about haveing a substance addiction.... i grew up in the 60s and 70s an i've never even done any drugs...... oh my wife got me to kick my sex addiction pretty fast after we were married ................................................

IM HOOKED ON COPENHAGEN BEEN 25 YRS TRIED TO QUIT IT MANY TIMES WIFE WOULD BUY ME SOME AND SAY DIP AND SHUT THE HELL UP OR DIVORCE IS ON THE WAY I CANT LIVE WITH YOU LIKE THIS!!!
SO MY EFFORTS HAVE BEEN TAXED WANT TO QUIT BUT WANT TO STAY MARRIED TOO (EVIDENTLY IM AN ASS WHEN I DONT HAVE SOME NICOTINE) SO WHAT NEXT?

Me too Kevin,started chewing tobacco on Papaw`s porch about the third grade(steady chewin that is) I didnt chew often but when I could I`d snag me a chew.
Started dipping Copenhagen in eighth grade...
Still dipping the shit.
Oddly before I deployed to Iraq the last time I was in line going through physical,dental,paperwork shit..
The dentist examined me and said you have the best teeth I`ve seen all day..
(helps if ya brush em I reckon)
I quit involuntarily in Desert Storm for about two months,,,,
(couldn`t get any)
I kick myself in the ass for ever picking a can up again after that..

Yep tobacco is a demon that wont leave ya alone. Its in every store and if you get started its hard as hell to quit. I'll beat my kids if I see them with a cig of snuff dont want them.... well lets rephrase... I want them to be better than I have been and make better decisions than I have made. Some times I think Im a good dad thats teaching the kids the right thing to do and sometimes i think WHAT THE FLOCK HAVE I TOLD YOU 10'000 TIMES EVERY DAY AND YOU STILL DONT GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!! I know none of you guys have ever gone thru thatbut it does get annoying at times. Kinda hard to say never even try as you put a pinch in beween the lip and gum. Do as I say not as I do comes to mind.
I have made my mistakes in my life (feel like a failure compared to my father) but im trying my best to raise my kids the best i can. If they want nicotine or alcohol in any form I will go to the limit of abuse too curb that wanting to try it.
They are just 9 the daughter and 5 the boy so it hasnt hit yet but its coming .... ill take any advice on this one any one has to offer.
