Phil: An everyday working rifle for me would be a classic designed by Otto Bock in 1909, the 9.3x62mm on an Obendorf Mauser action scoped with a 1.5x5 leupold and express sights firing 286gr woolieghs.

As an everyday rifle, it is not a bad choice. Much like a 35 Whelen (which I use for back up on plains game hunts).

The 9.3x62 as the Whelen would not be the best choice in Masailand, where the shots tend to be quite a bit longer. Well, for Fringe Eared Oryx they are. For the majority of the other animals it is a good choice.

On the light side for Buffalo, but a good choice for plains game.

Absolutely! I used a 9.3x64 with a 293gr TUG bullet to take a Topi out at about 250 yds in the Miowosi (I think that is how it is spelled) out in the swamp with very impressive performance. If I was hunting there again I wolud take a 375 H&H with 270 gr woodliegh protected points.

Ahhh yes, the Moyowasi. hunted there a number of times. Some good trophies there.

Your 9.3x64 is quite a bit more powerful than a 62.

Actually, ballistically identical to the 375. Either the 9.3x64 or the 375 is a good choice for an "everyday rifle".

Phil: I picked up a barrel in really good condition in 333 Jeffery, it is threaded for a P17 Enfield and I just happen to to have one. The 333 Jeffery is based on the 404 Jeffery case so brass is not that much of a problem and bullets, Oh those beautiful Woodleigh 333's. I am a sucker for these old classics did you ever use one?

Nope ! Never used one.

Not sure what the ballistics are, even.

Perhaps, you could post a bit of them here for all of us.

Thanks.

If I had to choose only one rifle for what you are describing, and in the case that you don't know what was going to be around the next bend, it would have to be my Winchester Model 70 Classic Stainless/HS Precision stocked 375 Weatherby Mag, using 300gr Woodleigh PP's @ 2800fps.
This would definitely be my 'working rifle', it will cover all game from the smallest to the largest with aplomb.

If I had 2 rifles to choose from, the above would still be on the list, and the other would have to be my Kimber in 300 Win Mag using 200gr Nosler Accubonds or partitions.

If DG is on the list, then my CZ 550 in 416 Rigby would get the nod, hands down! The 375 would probably accompany me as well, for longer shots due to the scope.

Cheers.

If I ever go to Africa to hunt, I will take a .416 Rem. and a 500 Jeffery just to put the odds a litter more in my favor. I just can't seem to fathom the idea of using piss ant calibers to hunt big game on the dark continent.  :applaud:
