Any knifemakers here?My grandad used to make knives from old saw blades.It has always fascinated me and I`ve wanted to try my hand at tempering carbon steel and making my own blades..
Just checking to see if we have any knifesmiths on the site..

well a friend of mine used Body Files to make some great knives and I have one of his last one's before he died. the one he made me has a set of Ceder for the grip and has a SS finger guard.
to this day it still have a edge you could shave with.

Sounds like a nice peice of steel Doc.I`d like to see a pic of it.I have one I`ve been working on and have the deer horn handles pretty well fitted .But the blade still needs to be drilled for the handles,a handguard put on it and the blade tempered..

A lot of years ago I made some knives using power hacksaw blades, pretty good steel. Had to draw the temper so's I could work them, drill and such, then re-harden them. Had fun with them. Made a couple of sizes of Kukri style knives from truck springs, gave them to my kids. When I moved a few years ago, the forge I built had to stay behind. Probably somebody using it for a barbeque right now, wondering what the fan is for.

I used to do some blacksmithing, unless it is just for fun I don't mess with it anymore. People will not buy a hand made knife when they can go to wall-mart and get a Gerber or Buck for next to nothing. By the time I buy the coal for the forge and the belts for my grinder and my time it just is not worth it. I used to use springs from old pickup trucks, it was easy to work with but held a good edge when you heat treat ( temper ) it right, just keep some oil on it.
I am on short time now, if it stays like this after deer season I might just have to fire up the old forge and call my dad up to get him to teach me how to make Damascus.
Thanks for starting this TG, it has been a long time since I have made a good knife.

I am a Knifemaker, past guild member, state association member, I have made blades from steel stock (both carbon and stainless steels), nickle, Damascus and other alloys. I enjoy digging up stumps and using the burl for scales.
I make knives by forging or stock removal, I have a forge as well as a machine shop. Making Damascus is really not that difficult once you understand that it is really pattern welding and what are the right materials to use. Old mill blades from saw mills are L6 steel, layer that with 1095 or 1084, you get a great steel. If add a layer of nickle to give a special shine in all of the layers.
A knifemaker who works from old files has a wonderful peace of metal to work with, I have seen many good examples of this niche, I have also seen some great folding knives that were made from old wood rasps, they have a unique look to them.
Now I just make knives for me, some for the kitchen and some to carry. Here is a picture of my two favorite carry blades. One of the other is on my belt when I am working my fields, generally next to my 45.
