Here is a Cowboy load that I made for a fellow club member.  It is from Hodgdon's older Cowboy manual.  I used a bullet weighing 155 grains rather than 158.

.38 special: cases were mixed and trimmed; Primer was WSP; Bullet was a cast 155gr RNFP / hard alloy; 3.1 grains of Hodgdon's International clays.

This load leaves small amounts of powder in the barrel.  A tighter crimp may help.  However, it shoots well to 50 yards, has low noise and recoil.  The bullet is from NIE hand tools #160.  I had Walt cut this bullet shallow with only two grease grooves.  The full depth has a flat base, three grease grooves and is 198 grains.

 Yours, HP

I am posting this one again.  I will avoid the centering button this time.  I have used some of these loads; H-110/Win 296, Lil'Gun, IMR 4227.  This info was retieved from the Web; Los Angeles Silhouette Association and Handloads.com.

This was an accurate load in my 5.5" Redhawk, above and below this the bullets key holed.  Primers and cases showed no excessive pressure signs. Temp was 49 deg F.

250gr LFP    12.0 gr.          Lil’Gun           1,186 fps    1.649"     CCI 550            Admin

Fired from a 5.5" Redhawk, 45 deg. F.  For these to fit in the Ruger I had to use 38 Special cases.  The bullet is a 35 caliber rifle LFP from Beartooth.  This data has not been pressure tested; it didn’t show any signs of being over pressure but should still be approached with caution.

Trim cases to fit cylinders, Freedom Arms 1.278”. ]Use your own cylinder length and subtract some.  Then trim as needed

Todd Normally tests loads at 100 yards. Due to windy conditions these tests were 10 shots each at 50 yards with a 8" Freedom Arms 357 and Leupold scope and rings from sand bag rest.

I shoot the 357 Maximum cartridge in both a 10 inch and a Super 14 Contender.

Here is my best load for hunting:

Bullet: 214 grain LSWC, Gator or Hornady Gas Check, sized to .358, Lyman Mold # 358627

Powder: IMR-4227 Start load 11 grains, MAX load 14.7,

My hunting load: is 12.5 grains of IMR-4227

Remington Brass, CCI Small Rifle Magnum Primer.

I generally use the Super 14 barrel for hunting, I get a velocity of about 1,300 fps.

If I have to use the 10" barrel due to some law, I think the velocity is around 1,150 fps.

Jerry
