As a part time guide who encounters wild boars I am often told stories of "super beast" hogs soaking up shots from 30-06`s, 270`s and the wonder magnums able to live through their encounters with hunters.
Actually I get quite frustrated and annoyed by tales I know are either bad shot placement or completes misses.
From my own experiences feral hogs are not "super beasts".I put more than one pig in the freezer with a 220 Swift and a 223 Rem with the appropriate bullet(not 40 grain VMAX`s :shameon:

) with a well placed shot will put down even the nastiest pigs.
I don`t reccomend it unless you are certain of your ability to shoot but if a hog presents himself and I have my 223.. :wink:

dead piggies(btw,my fellow guides all carry heavy barrel AR`s and pigs are on the menu when we are out on the ranch)I use a mini -14 myself with an eotech on it for close range multiple pigs..
Most of the time I am seen with a 7mm rem Mag(no hog ever born can handle a good shot from that rifle) or my 270(no hog ever made can handle a well placed heart lung or neck shot from it as well)..
Yes I also have a 45-70 but it is only used when trophy boars are on the menu and I may have to go in the brush to finish the deal(when a client shoot`s a bad shot on a big bad boar)..
In short, hogs are not super beasts.Shoot well,aa little knowledge of anatomy helps, and you`ll kill hogs

Well now, that IS good news. All these years I'd heard about how they were sponges for hot lead, took a lickin' and kept on tickin', etc. I thought I'd never be able to even consider a pig hunt until I had the wherewithal to field some kind of crew-served artillery piece.

Now the planning can begin!

one thing i do know about hogs.they dont leave much of a blood trail.that tough hide and layer of fat seals it off.double lung shot hog only runs about as far as a deer.little bit more scary crawlin into the thick stuff lookin for them .

neck shots do the trick..Heart lung shots with expansive bullets usually do the trick.The only problems I have seen are with light constructed bullets when they hit the shoulder plate and bone,still usually sufficient to put the animal down with at least an anchoring shot..(btw,I dont believe in anchoring shots. :shameon:

Your first round oughhta be a killer in my book)
I use a 130 grain Hornady in my 270 standard SP
In my 7x57 the 140 grain Gamking(wicked on smaller hogs,penetration and expansion are excellent)
In the 7mm Rem Mag I use 150 grain Ballistic Silvertip CT`s
(needless to say,massive wound channels)
In the 308 I use a 150 grain Nosler bt..(works great even on bigger hogs---heart lung shots)
300 Win Mag, I use a 165 grain SST..The 300 Win does not **** around with hogs.Usually bang flops even on big boy`sThough I have had hogs run 50 yards torn all to hell inside by the big .30..
45-70..I use a 300 grain Hornady HP..
this in my opinion,the 45-70 is the king of big boar (bore) hog guns

Hogs are tough, but like anything else, bullet placement is key to putting animals on the ground quick. The secret to putting big game animal down on the spot, is to break down the shoulders and then you don't have to track them.

interesting topic. i've never hunted wild boar but have talked about it much with the bro as he's hunted them on several occasions. we will get hunts in when time allows so i'll will throw this past the "experts" of the room. intentions aren't to hyjack the topic in any way. just fact finding.

when talking about boar hunts, i've always done so thinking of handguns being the primary weapon. .375, .44, .454 in the revolvers. 10mm, .45winmag, .50ae in my larger semiauto's.

last hunt the bro went on he took his pig with his .45acp. i always thought getting onto a place with lots of hogs would be fun taking all the appropriate handguns down and bloody as many as i could.

so what say the "experts"? if they're easy to kill with rifles, heavy cast bullets from the larger handgun rounds work ok? ranges allow such opportunity? in time, i'll find out for myself but from those who've seen and done, do my plans sound reasonable ?

Still no wild hogs on my lease but they are moving eastward from a couple of leases. Haven't had the opportunity to use my 50BMG on a piglet, but I'm patiently waiting!

I have never shot a wild pig. Although my family used to butcher hogs and the local butcher used an old Browning auto in 22 short to kill hogs for the butcher shop.

I killed my last hog at around 30 yards with my 1911 Springfield 45 acp. He dropped in his tracks. Like i said it all has to do with bullet placement.

yeah,my buddy dropped one with a neck shot using a 243.mine was 40 yards out,standing in back high milo.i could only see his outline.the nosler a-bond had to chop past 10 yds of stalks to reach him.it made a quarter size hole goin in behind the shoulder and stopped under the skin on the far side.i think the a-bond is a pretty good bullet.neck shot woulda required a lot more choppin.

Korey any of them hand cannons you mentioned will plow a boar hog just right :wink:

I carry my 357 mag with 158 gr SJHP`S for goin in the brush after one sometimes and have recently started carrying my 45 acp.My 357 has always done the job.That .454 Casull

Thanks Gene. Guess if a .357 or acp can take care of business, I'm on a ok line of thinking with the rounds I'm looking to use. The Casull would be handgun #1 bloodied. Very much want to see what that cast 395 gr. CP LBT solid would do. .44 Mag and its 320 gr. LBT solid #2. The semiauto's in one order or another, after that. Guess I do need to consider the .500SWMag, too. It still needs to see action. Have to be a pretty big hog to require a 500 gr. hard cast WFN, though. :confused:

I have posted the photos before but just a reminder that hogs are not the hard to kill if you shoot them in the right place. In my opinion the best hog rifle you can carry in the thick stuff is the Win 94 or Marlin 336 in 30-30 with my favorite being the Win 94.

agreed Bob,It is hard to beat a 30-30 as a pig gun when shots are close or in dense brush.
On a side note I meant to take pic to show yall.That cull buck I shot last week was starting to head for the thick brush and I had to hustle up and shoot.My bullet hit a branch of a cedar tree and shattered the limb about the size of a golf ball in diameter.The bullet held together and punched him behind the third rib or so in a quartering away shot exiting slightly high above the shoulder but below the spinal column.I was sort of surprised after seeing that limb busted that my bullet had made it without deformation before hitting the buck.The entrance hole was a perfect small 7mm or so sized entrance.Still a bit surprised that the Ballistic Silvertip held together that well.It is not a terribly heavy constructed bullet as a Nosler partition or such but did extremely well.
The hogs I have shot with it,damnnnnnnnnnn it is devastasting after it opens up a bit..
I have grim reaper grips like yours but they wont fit my Para hicap frame.. :sad:

oh well,another reason to get me a GI 1911 :lol:

got the grips so I gotta get another 45..haha,well it`ll work when I tell the wife I bought me another pistol

Hey Timber i killed a small button buck believing i was shooting a doe Thanksgiving evening with my Ruger Blackhawk 4.5 inch barrel 44 Mag . I will post photos later. Looking forward to your photos of the deer.
