I remember that some one had made a triple stepped neck cartridge staring with a 50 BMG case and then got it necked down to 223. No that is strange.

Another of my cats. This is the 240 Laser. It is my new long distance, reach out and touch them red mister. It is a 280 Remington with the shoulder moved forward .250 inches then the shoulder angle changed to 45 degrees and necked to 6mm. The result is a 71 grain capacity case.
With H-870 it is reported that the 240 Laser has launched 105gr Berger VLDs at 3,800 fps and will shoot sub .5 inch groups. The cartridge was designed for very long distance work on rockchucks and ground squirrels. It is bad medicine for prarie poodles and coyotes at 500 to 1,000 yards. The gun is a Pre 64 Mdl 70 with 28 inch SS Kreiger barrel.

I have my purpose made wildcat, the .357 max. necked down to 8mm.
The purpose was to have something to use in a project intending to see how little I could spend to make a rifle using a Topper action.
In the future I plan to make .308 and .257 versions.
With the Topper action I am keeping the pressure below 25,000, calculated, still shooting a 125gr bullet at 1800+ fps
I have named the the series, 8x41r, .308x41r and .257x41r
Should work nicely in ss rifles and pistols.
Some of the older rook rifles with eaten out barrels could be sleeved and chambered for any of these and be useful again.
I just turned the die on my lathe, made a reamer from drill rod, turned the chamber out close and finished it by hand, actually pretty easy.
I have yet to damage a case in forming, that may change as I try the .257 version.

As you are making your own dies and reamers you are not out a custom charge by a reamer maker like Clymer. However I think you should be aware that the cartridges you are thinking about, have already been made under the title Max or Maxi. Elgin Gates invented the 357 Super Mag and Remington produced the cartridges commercially, under the name 357 Maximum. Remington then tried to claim the invention, I have copies of the letters, required by Gates' attorney, where Remington admits that Gates, not them, invented the cartridge. Right after the first batch of brass was produced and sent to Gates, in Gates fasion, he started making single shot cartridges based on the commercial 357 Super Mag cases, 25 Max, 264 Max, 270 Max, 30 Max, etc., etc. Incidentally the 357 Super Mag is the baby of the Super Mag line, which includes the 375 SM, 414 SM, 445 SM and the 455 SM.
I have owned many 357 SM guns, a 445 SM gun and reloaded for a 375 SM gun. I have also owned a 270 Max in the XL made by RPM. I have two 357 SM rifles built on Martini Cadet actions.
Unless you just want to keep your pressures at 25K due to the action, it is not necessary for the cartridge's sake. The 357 SM or Max cartridge cruses at 50K. It is a great basis for SS rounds.

The 25,000 psi limit is to recognize the cast iron Topper action, the rook rifles I have heard of also were designed for 20,000-30,000 psi.
The barrel is a Turk takeoff, chamber end cut off small enough to pass through the head stock of my little 7" lathe which has a 7/8"+ hole.
I shall try to post pictures, sometimes they go, sometimes they just disappear.

Not to hijack the thread, but the Rook rifles came in several different actions. If you are looking to make a rifle based on the Martini Cadet Rook Rifle action, that action was made for BP cartridges but is a 50-55K action and very suitable for the 357-357 Max based cartridges.

The Max cartridges can be and have been made in the Contender, XL (Merrill), BF, and MOA. The die sets were fairly common at one time but now are more difficult to find and might require a custom order. The TC is a pretty simple work-up, if you are framiliar with the Brown Barrels of several years ago. In the Brown system, you simply cut an old barrel off before, the taper at the chamber, ream the chamber out, thread the tube created, thread the shank and turn a new barrel into the tube. You have a custom barrel. Also, the TC is one of the few guns that you can change from pistol to rifle and back, without a problem with the ATF.

The rook rifles I had in mind are light, slim, elegant top breaks, usually about .30-.35 caliber.
Used to be quite a few around and cheap as there was no ammo in NA for most of them.

found a 3006 case ackley improved necked to 22 cal in a pile of brass I bought and it had been fired. I keep it cause I coudn't belive it.

i was given a cartridge collection a number of years ago, it's full of some wild stuff.
i'll look around this weekend and see what i can find.
i know for a fact that i have a couple of giant elephant cartridges, like 460 wetherby 500 and 570 nitro express.
but the favorite for me has to be the truly awsome 700 nitro express, a 1,000gr. bullet going 2500fps. generating 14,000ftlbs. (any one who shoots one of these bad boys must have sexual problems)

There's a long story about how the 700 Nitro came into being, but the short version is, a guy wanted a 600 Nitro express, but H & H had already built their LAST one for a guy, and made a promice to him, to never build another 600NE. Some years later when a client came along that also wanted one, they came up with the 700NE to keep their previous promice There's now numerous 600's and 700's being build again, and in fact, i saw a guy shoot an elephant with a 700NE not long ago on a hunting show.
Anyway, here's some cartridges that were designed for DG hunting with the Valmet 412 shooting system. The cases were formed from a shortened B.E.L.L. basic case, and necked to .338, .375 and .416. The 30-06 was thrown in there for comparison.
I'm not sure they could be called a true "wildcat" though, as a small run of ammo/brass was mfg.ed and sold through Shot Gun News.
Here's another. This is the 9.3x74R case, only it's been improved, but removeing the body taper and giving less neck. Factory ammo can "still" be fired in the imp chamber...

back in the 80's and during my silhouette shooting days i knew a man whom made a 9mm-357mag load for hunter pistol silhouette matches. well i think he made up the load. in other words i learned the load from him. i started making the load myself and was using it for hunter pistol matches. nice load. worked well. the load was a 9mm speer 88gr hp bullet seated on top of the powder inside a 357 mag case. yes the bullet was seated inside the case on top of the powder. down inside where you did not have a bullet on the outside. i don't remember the powder we used, but i have all of the data in one of my old load books and how to make the loads. the load shot like a 22mag but with far more knock down power. ran some chronograph time with the load, all so in one of my old data books. saw one person shoot 39 out of 40 using my 9mm-357 mag loads one day. he forgot his ammo that day and had to use some of my rounds. we use this load in a 10 inch thompson center contender 357 mag gun with an aimpoint mark 1. this load was the best that i have found at that time for the hunter pistol matches. several of us shot a nra national hunter pistol match with this load in the 80's.
