I make sheath knives and folders. I have made some automatic knives based upon the Darryl Ralph liner lock design. But the knife I carry the most is a simple Tanto.
This knife is dishwasher safe, the scales on the handle are stabilized with an acrylic, the steel is ATS-34.
Mostly it goes with me when I am working my land, but I have carried it on my belt under a jacket many times when I go to public places, many times with my conceal carry pistol along side of it.
To me this is a really good utility knife, plus the design will let me plunge the knife through basic 2A body armor. I haven't run in to that need yet.
But the Tanto design is a strong one.
Many times I will carry a utility pocket knife or another sheath knife with me in the field, you never know what your going to need. Sometime a liner lock folder and other times a Swiss Army knife with a lot of extras that I have never used, yet.
What do you carry?

i always used to carry a big folder and a couple pocket knifes(one was a mini swiss gentlemans knife) and often my own utility knife , but for the last couple years nothin but me and my mcgyvers(mcgyvers around here are the gerber multi-tool pliers) the file is a lil rough to quickly fix a broken nail but they work ,the knife sadly is small but thin and sharp tho i liked my old ones a bit better with the 2 blades the new ones have the changable saw blade that comes with the remgrit blade that will saw anything in half ( given the motivation and time of course lolz )while not a total tool kit is so handy i feel naked without it ( almost like i used too without any of the 4 i used to carry only worse ! way worse ! )the blade may not be as quick on the draw as my fixed blade utility knife ,speaking of the old ones ... after 2 sheaths i managed to break the pliers part ,i wasnt abusing them nor do i ever try to ( i know the benifit of the proper tool etc ) but broke none the less so i sent it back complete with worn out sheath and bit insert set , i figured i'd have to pay sum fee etc nope ! got'em back no charge, they even replaced the med screwdriver blade that chipped the corner and the small screwdriver blade that i had ground down to fit my glasses( i kinda missed that part dang it )but i was dismayed that tho they sent me a new sheath it didnt have my bit insert set with it so i called and said hey great job on the fix but .... they sent a new bit set and sheath ,in other words love thier customer service !
i prolly need to get a website fotobucket account or somethin so i can share a foto or few but in truth the only digital cam i have is the cell and it isnt the best lolz

I have always given a life time warranty on the knives that I have made. That also includes the ones that I gave to some young soldiers that went to the Gulf War. They wanted some really thick crash knives. Not sure if they were allowed by regs, but they were happy.
Since I started making knives many years ago, I have had two warranty repairs. One the guy was using the knife to pry with, he snapped a scale off. The other was a sheaf repair. Both were over night repairs.
The reason I carry the knives that I do is really simple, while pulling a folder out of your pocket or off your belt, mine will already be ready to use.

Good looking knife, Jerry. I have wondered about a Tanto blade for everyday use. I carry a CRKT M16-13 for everyday carry. Best knife I have had. It has a chisel and serrated edge. Easy to carry and with practice, pretty fast to open.

I also like the tanto. With a chizle edge they are hard to beat for penetration and utility.

From some training in oriental knife making and a couple of demonstrations, I have found the Tanto blade to be good for protection as well as for utility uses.
Body armor that is Threat Level 2A, a Tanto will go right thru it, I haven't found any better grade body armor to try a blade on. I go back and forth on serrations, I have made a few blades that were serrated, but if you keep a straight edge sharp, it will cut thru about anything. Where serrations, you can saw at some things.
In my shop, I have a set of wheels on a bench grinder, that are compressed paper and clay, it doesn't take long to put a razor sharp edge on a knife. These wheels won't over heat the steel in the blade if you use it properly.
I use a differential harding process when heat treating my blades, the spine is a little soft and the edge is very hard. A knife made this way is hard to break.

I don't particularly care for the serrated edges, prefer straight edge. Have found the chisel edge to be good, though edge is a little on the weak side. Keeps an edge pretty good.
Tried making knives, not much success. Put together a few, with two good ones. Buy the blades and put handles on them. I have some mesquite from this area that turned out some good handles. Have some pieces of mesquite that have been drying for a few years that might have some good figure in them. Might try something again.

Jerry, I have a friend who makes exellent knives. He always advocated the tanto for a field knife for anyone. He was always making one for this soldier or that one. What impressed me the most was the penetrating ability of the tanto design. He would drop a rough blade from 6 inches into a hardwood workbench and get better than 1/2 inch of penetration. That is without a finished edge. I would carry a tanto over most anything. They also work great on eyes if you jab 'em right.

I like a double edged Fairborn design in that role.I have a bad assed Solingen steel blade and plus the one I carried in Iraq the last time made by a guy in the 75th Ranger regiment,
Its a Bowie style, wicked assed blade.

Tough as hell and will hold a razor edge when wetted on a diamond stone and then finished on a Arkansas oil stone
Ranger knife laying on my thigh in Iraq
