Just copy & paste the above into your reply. I probably should have left swamps out. But around here we have different kinds of swamps, grass, spruce or cedar.

I hunt the Edwards Plateau region of Texas. Woodlands are cedar thickets, 'bought the same as brush. Don't have any open grasslands, at least not n the sense of the western regions. I'm not exactly sure what this "swamp" thing is, never seen such a place...

7.62X54R for all. If I think I'm too far away, I'll move up or not shoot. Ain't no such thing as too close, and if the bolt sticks there is the bayo. So far as brushy swampy goes, I don't believe that a 182 gr pill is going to be deflected very much, and since I'm not pulling the trigger if I can't see hair, it doesn't matter.
She's a mite heavy for walkabout, that I'll admit.
Radical approach, eh?

If I could only have one for all those region's it would be a Rem 660 w/20" barrel, a 2 3/4x scope and chambered in 308. I can say that because I had it, my theiveing kid has it now! It is short enough to handle well in all areas, has enought scope to shoot well to 300+ yds, is light enough and balances well enough not to be cunbersome and it is in a cartridge more than adequate for any white tail any where. Great minds think alike. Mine has been worked on a bit. it now sits in an H&S Precision Fibertahne stock made for a short action Rem. 700 that I adapted to the 660. Scope is an all steel original Weaver K-3. The entire rifle has been painted in camouflage of my own design. It's the third and hopefully final stock for that rifle. he first felt like crap and even with a pad kicked the snot out of me. I replaced it with a fajen mannlicher style stock that I really liked. While in that stock, I made the second longest shot on any game animal inmy life. One of my hunting buddies had wounded a large Mule Deer and I was fortunate enough to take it down running at 427 paces. The three of us paced it off and averaged the count which came to that 427 pace figure. Guess you could call it a luck shot. Lucky for me and unlucky for the deer.
Years later, when I moved to Arizona, Remington did a recall due to problems with the trigger. The local Remington repair shop had to open up the stock a bit for the new trigger to fit but forgot to seal the wood. During ahunt in some heavy rain, I guess enough water got into the stock to cause it to swell and split. About that time there was an article about H&S Precision and thei synthetic stocks. They were just a couple hundred miles up the road from me so the wife and I took a little trip up to Flagstaff and got a tour of the plant and I got two stocks, one for my 660 and another for my Remington 700 BDL in 30-06. This was way back in late 1980 as I recall and I've never had reason to regret buying either stock.
FWIW, if you like short light rifles, try a Ruger 77 RSI, the one with the full length stock. The one I have, also in .308 Win. is a real sweetheart in handling although I must admit, very fussy when it comes to ammo. Guess you can't have everything.
I wil ladmit that for one subspecies of Whitetail Deer, the Coues Deer of southern Arizona and New Mexico, as small as they are, I would much rather carry my Winchester M70 .300 Win. mag. Shots on those little buggers can be an awful long way out and they're a very easily spooked deer. They are extremely hard to see as they blend in so well in that desert landscape. It's like trying to spot a ghost.

AS you can probably tell i like the 7 mm rem mag and .300 win mag in the swamp and brush, why you might ask because i want them to drop right their no if and or buts about it those to will do it, my next favroit is the 06 also with great droping power put in the woodlands setting i can track a little better if i do make that not so great of a shot, grass lands i want a flat shotting gun the .270 win would work but again i favor the 7mm and .300 win mag.
that is just the way i see it
