Those finned ones look like a deer-dropper!!! they are completely hollow inside with a hole in the top. But if I ever needed to drop a bear in defense I'm screwed.

These are supposed to be able to penetrate class IV armor.

What? is this for real? must be for lazy cattle ranchers.
but I'm really interested in the finned slugs. Anyone have experience with them?Attachment: finslugs.gif (Downloaded 58 times)

Those Dixie Slugs will do everything Mr. Gates claims. The Terminator is for rifled barrels. A similar slug, The Predator I believe, is for smoothbores.
The Bolo Ball loads are designed for just one thing – to separate people from their money.
The finned slugs, I dunno. Gotta go some ways to be better than a Foster slug and I’m kind of skeptical of some new innovation that claims great things. Another BP offering, or are they from someone else?
As far as bears go, I’m in the middle of bear country, and in the 19 years I’ve been here, I’ve only had to shoot 3 bears. They were all nuisance bears, serious property destruction. A black bear kills pretty easy, .30-30 did for all 3 of them.

I found the finned slugs while searching "swagged shotgun slugs." I was looking for a way to invent my own mold. I was going to make a .50 tear drop shape. I wanted to try a tear drop shape because it is natures most aerodynamic shape. If you watch a tear drop shaped item in a wind tunnel with smoke you can clearly see the wind fallows the outline perfectly. add fins and you have a serious tool. My idea was to make a tear drop sabot slug. Maybe fill the leftover space with toilet paper or something. But I don't own a rifled barrel. saves me $400, I just bought a $15 IC. I found these slugs at...

Good to know. I live in central Minnesota and have only saw one bear before. It was 5 years ago 1000 yards off and got shot 3 days later. That was near Alexandria. I have heard incidents of them around here though. last year a black bear went into someones garage. It was in maple lake only 7 miles from here!!! I don't remember what happened. i think the DNR caught it. If it comes around here it better stay away. You are not getting my motorcycle for lunch.

Bears are the most obnoxious right about now. New cubs with Mama, Yearlings off on their own for the first time and all of them real hungry after coming out of hibernation. I'll throw out 50 pounds of dry dog food a couple of places where I can see from the house - they're usually fun to watch. It's too much work to properly dress and butcher a bear, so I'd just as soon not shoot one unless necessary. A sow with cubs (or an insane boar) can be dangerous, so I carry a revolver when I'm out on the land, but I've never had to use it.

As to the slugs, a few thoughts..............
Corbin equipment is absolutely top-notch - the best, but it has some drawbacks. Start-up cost is an obvious one - that stuff is expensive. As to selling some of your output to recoup the cost, well, maybe, but the market probably isn't very big. Another problem (to me anyhow) with swaged slugs is that they are pure lead - real soft stuff. If I make my own, I prefer a harder alloy.
A teardrop might be very aerodynamically efficient, but that rounded front end is the least efficient profile as far as terminal ballistics are concerned. Good penetration but not a lot of tissue damage. Years ago I had a friend make me a mold, basically a Foster slug with a wide flat nose. Unfortunately, my design didn't leave enough weight forward and I had a good tumbler. I still think the idea was sound, just not my execution. I didn't have to pay for that mold. If ever I have another one made - paying for it this time - I'd put a lot more thought into the thing. The LEE Slug mold puts out a pretty fair slug, and isn't real expensive.

Only thing you have to worry about in Alexandria is if you publicly state that the Runestone's a fake. That gets the local citizenry all riled up.

Those were designed by Flash Gordon weren't they?

They should do well for dispatching Ming the Merciless.
