This is a do it yourself pack in camp/hunt pack out. I have both a 270 WSM Winchester Super Shadow and a Remington Model Seven in 300 WSM. My thought is to bring the 270 WSM because it weighs next to nothing and the plastic stock can't be hurt. After that I have two pair of Lacross 500 thinsulate hyper dry boots. After that I have very little. I do have a modern 3 man pop up and one of those blue tarps they sell at wallmart. and of course lots of rope. I'm not by myself so some things will be shared i guess. I'll also need or want to look into having ......... |

A Rino 120 GPS.Small and they work great.You hump a far piece off and get in dark timber its easier to get lost than you think.I am a .277 fan ,cant attest to the short mag but I`ve been shootin a old Remington in 270 Win since I was a sprout and I got full faith in a 130 or 150 grain pill going down range at minute of elk heart/lung. A good cast iron skillet and some lard,flour,onions,salt,pepper,bacon,eggs,5 or s0 pounds of fajita meat,a bunch of spam and bologna,lunchmeat and light bread in camp to grub on..Coffee I won`t be without and a campfire percolator is a good start to a morning.I`d carry 15 pounds of so of jerky too to eat on when out for the day. Clean water is a must and should be enough to keep you hydrated.. A cooler full of Budweiser on hand after ya take a big bull and the sitting around the fire times at night. A good skinning blade and a small compact saw for quartering as well should be in your possession.A daypack is handy with toilet paper tylenol as well,I carry a military strobe in mine in the event I get messed up bad and cant move on my own power to alert folks(aircraft as well) to where I am.In that pack should be an emergency solar blanket,water,some grub,waterproof matches,extra cartridges.A spare change of dry clothes aint a bad idea either if ya have the room. Around your neck,good binos.. I`m sure there is a bunch more stuff folks would carry but thats a few I see as good ideas to have on hand. an air mattress makes sleepin on the ground better.Trust me,I`ve slept enough days on dirt and mud to enjoy the comforts of somethin soft to lay on at night...and a good sleepin bag. |

OK so I got to the part about the big cooler full of budwiser and had to stop. I actually got in my car an drove out and about. I'm still thinking about the cast iron skillett. This is soposed to be a hike in hunt hike out. I shouldent have used the word camp, more of a stay in the outdoors. One trip in is my thought and more than one trip out to carry game. So now I'll go read the rest of the post and hope that I mis read something..... |

Ok I read the rest of the post and it seems pretty sound. I have a good pair of Bronton Binos as well as a Brunton spotting scope but wasn'r sure of packing it. I also have a set of Base layer from scent lock a set of Under Armor for cold weather two sets of military style long underware. I have my eye on a dual purpose dual edge wood / bone saw. I have my deer hunting knife that also has a gut hook and small bone saw it's light and holds an edge. My biggest consern is gear that will keep me alive and comfortable far from civilazition. I'll need a fart sack (sleeping bag) and a pack for gear and hopefully meat. I may need a smaller tent my thought is a smmaler tent takes less to warm up. My boots ar well broken in but I don't know if 500 thinsulate is good enough come October in the Idaho Mountians. I've hunted and walked all day (and into the night) to do so. But I've always had a house or tent camp with many others to return to. I've done a ton of camping some on my own and much more with family, I've never been away from a truck if I needed to get help or just go ... I laugh at those ppl on survivor that don't even know to scrape the magnesium from the back. Fire is not a problem for me, never has been In west by God we drank out of the crick but that was 30 years ago. PPL would freak out to do that today. I hope yo carry a water filtration device and get water while out and about. God knows I dont want to carry it not at 8 lbs a gallon. so what I'm looking for is someone that knows and has used and had good luck or maybe bad luck to tell me what worked for them and what didn't so I don't make the same mistake. Please be specific I don't mind. |

I went on a pack hunt last year. I took my 270 WSM instead of my 300 mWinny because of weight issues. I took down a 6x6 Elk with it using Winchester Fail safe factory loads. For water purifying I took a MSR Miox system weighs next to nothing. I would also get a Rino 120. A guy we were with had one and it was the best thing since sliced bread. I went out and got two. The only other thing that I would take that has not been mentioned is a skull cap. MRE's would probably be the best way to go if your hiking your food in. |

I cant disagree with any thing said, Just a personal preference....Get the Rhino 130, it has more features than the 120 and they are well worth the extra cost. I have one and I wouldnt trade it for anything. My brother has the 120 and we keep in constant contact while hunting, and when I shot my last deer in the deep woods, I sent him my location and he navigated right to me I live in Idaho and Timber is right, when you get into the black timber, you can get turned around very easily. Is Idaho one of the states that require a guide when an out of state hunter wants to hunt wilderness areas? I think Wyoming might be one but I'm not sure about ID. That always griped me just a bit as when I was in the Air Fore, I ended up in just about all their survival schools. Some were easy and fun and others pure hell. Paul B. |
