Looking for any load data for the 45-60. Would like to use smokeless powder. I will be shooting the loads in a Taylor Arms 1876 Winchester Centennial clone. Thank you for any help.

With a 300 grain cast bullet you can use 2400 powder. I am not sure if you have new brass or old fashion balloon head brass for your rifle. A starting point is 20.00 grains of 2400. You can try IMR 4198 with that same bullet, start with 24.00 grains, you may need to use some fill material such as Cream of Wheat (COW). With IMR 3031 you should start with 27 grains with the 300gr cast bullet and use COW as a filler.
All the standard warning and disclaimers apply to this information.
Hope this helps,
Jerry

I shoot a HI-Wall 38-55 and also a Quigley Sharps 45-70. Both rated for high power loads. Rather than take a beating with the recoil, I load soft and easy..You might want to explore the Trail Boss powder from IMR. it's a very bulky powder that loads well in the bigger cases. It is not a substitute for black powder, rather a powder designed for larger cases.
I checked it out on the internet, and found loads that work quite nicely without beating you up.
38-55 load........7 grains of Trail Boss....250 gr bullet.....nice easy load.
45-70 load.......11 - 13 grains Trail Boss.....350 grain bullet...fun to shoot.
Not too much clean up with these loads...I would estimate the 38-55 load at 980 fps or so. Really shoots almost like a .22 LR.....
Check into this on the net...you may find the 45-60 loads......good luck
Let me know how it works out..................................Winnebago

Might want to go over to Cas City.com, they have an entire section dedicated to the 76 and its cartridges.

I thought I saw a clearance sale from Midway that showed some 45-60 brass. You want to check it out online or call Midway.

For me it was cheaper to trim down 45-70 brass. Only difference between the two are the length. Took 400 of my 45-70 brass and ran them thru the power trimmer and trimmed them all down to 1.880 for the 45-60.

Thanks Quigley, for the information. I was doing that for a while and it works fine. I wanted to have some correct head stamped brass for the rifle. With the rifle I have I had to also thin the rim thickness down for the action to close. Trimming the 45-70 works great this was another reason for selection of the 45-60. It shoots great.

Was gonna order some at one time that had the correct headstamp but Buffalo Arms was out of them at the time.
With my rifle I didn't have to trim the rim thickness so the 45-70 brass is what I've stayed with.
That smokeless load I mentioned above is at blackpowder velocity...about 1300fps on the chrony if I remember correctly and shoots great.
