Thompson Center guy here!
Contender.....couple dozen 10's, a few 14's and some 21's for the light weight carry in the field hunting. Those 10's rule the pistol range out to 100 yards(scoped) and 50 yards(iron-well at least in my younger good seeing days)! My favorite: 14" .357Maximum, shoots those big slugs with extreme accuracy.
Encore.....mostly rifle barrels. And when I look at something new, it usually will say Bullberry on the side.
Scott (maybe a Ruger #1 needs to be here) B

I had a Contender pistol at one time, with 14" .223Rem barrel and .22LR barrel. But, it simply wasn't my 'thing' so I sold it.
My all-time favorite singleshot is my .22LR BSA International Martini match rifle - a great old competition rifle from England, long ago replaced by the botlies like the Anschutz and Walther match rifles. But the old Martini still shoots better groups than I can. It came with no sights, so I found a nice aperture sight on Ebay, along with a Freeland globe front sight. I also mounted a scope rail on it, but prefer the aperture sights. 14 pounds of singleshot fun!

Hey OK Hunter,
Just got wind of your single shot preference. They sure can be a lot of fun, can't they? I'm lucky to have several great SS rifles...namely 3 1895 Winchester Lowalls and a Winchetser Hiwall as well a a Sharps 45-70 Quigley.
Lowalls are 22 LR w/ #5 heavy barrel, door knob and hand stop...a .17 Ackley Hornet w/ single-set trigger and a 218 Mashburn Bee. All are just like new and shoot great...and I SHOOT THEM !!! My Hiwall is a 38-55 with vintage Leupold 10X target scope. Really a beautiful combination and it shoots fine. I load 7 grains of Trail Boss behind a 250 gr. lead bullet...shoots like a .22..no appreciable recoil or noise and groups inside 3 inches at 100 yards...benched.. Really my favorite to shoot at the range when it comes to SS rifles. Altho the others are a joy to shoot as well. Really tough when you have to decide what great rifle you are going to shoot...I love it!
Have other great pieces, but the most fun is the SS rifles...gives you time to shoot, bullshit, load and shoot and BS some more....What a great life...

I tend to agree with your ideas on using a single shot making one a better shooter. I don't believe it happens by default but I do believe that the longer one uses a single shot rifle, the more certain he becomes of his shot, prior to taking it.

You're sure right on these points Winnebago! I picked up a TCR 87 Aristocrat with .308, .223 barrels and most recently a .22 hornet barrel. What a fun battery to shoot.

I have a New York Militia Remington Rolling block in 50/70 i still shoot now and then and Sharps that is still in the process of rebarreling with a heavier barrel chambered for 45 2 7/8 sharps (45-110). The Sharps was a 45/70 previous.

I couldn't keep from laughing at the damn post turtle...
Good stufff on your big bores. I don't have anything that large but have friends who shoot the 1000 yd matches with them. I'm impressed.

Heres a link to the joke that goes with the post turtle pic ok hunter. Many advantages to long range big bores. Wind drifts the bullets very very little. Good eyes and a creedmore sight make it fairly easy with a little practice to become profecient at long distance. Alot to be said about them really. The 50/70 is only a 200-300 yard rifle for the most part they drop off very quick but they make a helluva a wallop when they hit at any distance. The 45 caliber buffalo guns shoot much much flatter and much much farther. However it was said in the old days that sometimes a 45/70 wouldnt knock a buffalo down when a 50 cal was a stopper if you got it there. The 45-90s saw more use then the 110s in the buffalo days, the 110s came along at the tail end if not almost to late to see use. The New York State Militia refused to adopt the 45/70 in 1872 cause they felt it lacked stopping power and chose the 50/70 instead. Not that i agree with that though either one will stop a horse or a man easy. Think it was cause it was such a long drop off in size compared to the 58 cal rifled muskets of the day that they were leaving behind that it looked small.

Paul B wrote: Does 22 Ruger #1's ranging from .22 Hornet to .416 Rigby and 45-70 count? Must also add a custom .223 "walkabout" based on the #1 action plus a Browning B-78 in 30-06. I hunt with them too. A couple that don't shoot well for whatever reason are scheduled to be donors fpr cartridges Ruger does not chamber as standard.
I would almost kill to get a Dakota #10 in 7x57 even if they are horribly expensive.
The "walkaout is probably the most fun. A Ruger #1 action with a 20" Remington Model 7 barrel. I like to hike the desert, find a comfortable spot and glass for coyotes. When I spot one, I try and do a stalk to see if I can get close enough for a shot. Don't much care if I shoot or not, the kick is in getting up close, if I can. So far, it's coyotes 10, me zip, but I am getting a lot closer than when I first started out.
I decided I would not shoot unless it was 50 yards or less even if I could take one at 200 yards with the rifle. The rifle will do 1.5" at 200 yards BTW. Not that bad for a lightweight.
My biggest complaint about the Ruger #1 rifls is trhey do a very lousy job of sealing the interior wood, the wopd at the end of the forearm where it butts against the receiver and under the rubber pad. My next complaint is that ridiculously too thin, too hard pad they put on their guns, I mean like on the .404 Jeffery or 416 Rigby? Come on Ruger, those'r elephanrt guns. You don't put a skimpy 3/8" pad on a cannon like that.
Oh well. At $6.25 a shot, I don't shoot the Rigby very much anyhow.
Paul B. PaulI have several #1's and 2 #3's and enjoy them all! My son and I were at a gun show one day several years ago and we kept seeing the man walking around with a Ruger #1 with a FOR SALE sign kinda flapping behind. We saw him show it to many of the dealers at the tables and he would shake his head and walk off, so I finally stopped him at the end of an aisle just before we left and asked to see it. He said sure I'm tired of carrying this damn thing around. It was the Tropical in 458 Win but he stopped me as I was reading the Caliber...he said he bought it on a whim and that his gunsmith had told him it was in perfect shape, but a previous owner had a 458 Lott reamer run in it and that he had ordered a box of ammo from his gunsmith. I asked him what he wanted for the "damned thing", he thought for a minute and said I'll take $350.00 and throw in this box of 458 Lott ammo with one round fired. I took it home and then my son and I went to the range. We put up a target at 25 yds for the first few shots, I snuggled it into the sandbags took a 6 0'clock hold and squeezed the remarkably light trigger. It took me a few seconds to comprehend all that was going on immediately after the shot then I stood up, made sure everything was still there and attached and it was. I looked down range and everything was blurry when I looked straight on but if I turned my head just a little I could see just fine. I did this several times and the straight on blurry vision didn't go away so I took my shooting glasses off and everything was fine. I looked down at my glasses and saw a wet spot in the middle of both lenses. I can only believe that that is where my eyes bugged out and hit my shooting glass lenses when that monster recoiled... And I'll swear to it!

Hunter, I'm with you on single shots. I have a rather sizable collection of them in different makes and models, mostly custom. One of the best is a .225 Win on a Miller action. (Rimmed cartridges and single shot just naturally go together, don't you think?) Octangular barrel and engraving also add a nice touch. I'd like to have more rifles built on Miller actions, but getting them has always been a long wait, and may no longer be made anyway. I'll try to post some pics of different singles, beginning with the Miller. Hope everyone enjoys.
Happy thanksgiving to all

Beautiful rifles, Offhand! My #1V looks plain compared to those!
I like the way the whole action comes out with the block on the Miller.

Stretch, I'm sure it isn't at all plain, I think all #Ones are beautiful. The Miller action is a marvel, especially the way the fire control is integral with the mechanism and fully adjustable, I have the trigger pull set at about 6ozs. Sorry about my poor photography, but glad you liked anyway.
