Has anyone every tried their favorite .22 rim fire at 200 yards....shooting at eggs?!?!?
Was thinking about doing some experimenting this coming weekend. And I was wondering what to do with some older eggs that have been left in the refrigerator in the garage.....so putting two and two together! Egg shoot at 200 yards!!! Think I'll do this the hard way, prone without bi-pod(rolled mat maybe), and no rear bag.
I've got my favorite 22rimfire ammo loaded into the range bag. Think I'll wait until the day of to load up the eggs....
Anyone else do any long range work with a 22 rim fire? What are your favorite targets at these ranges? What were your hit-to-miss ratios?(Be honest, I need something to shoot for-no pun intended) I might even try sending some out to the steel plates I have on the power lines(475yds, 555yds, 850yds, and 925yds)-I don't think I have a snowballs chance of touching those, but hey! it's just 22rimfire ammo!!
Scott (need some trigger time) B

Long range with rimfire is relative, but --
Bowling pins at 100 yards, measured. You have to hit the top to knock them over. Might have hit them, but only 50% went down.
Single shot Kimber target, CCI std vel. Benched with forend support, no butt support, target peep sights.Last edited on Wed Aug 12th, 2009 03:03 AM by ghrit

At the old homeplace I had a 6 inch steel pipe as a post about 5 feet high out of the ground at 300 yards..
Now and then I would send 22 lr rounds at it from my most accurate 22..My Marlin model 25..wasnt to hard to lob hits at it..I used to take 16 penny nails and tack em in a post..
Then try to drive the nail in at 10 yards with it..Has a sweet 4x Weaver on it...muey bueno rifle...

My longest .22LR shots are at the 110 yard berm - I just don't have access to a longer shooting range. With my best rifles, popping 12 gauge empties on the berm is fun. I may try some eggs - natural and biodegradable!
Might get a bit stinky for those coming out later..........
Eggs are cheap here - 69 cents per half-dozen.

I like to shoot at old golf balls. They react violently when hit, and can be shot many times before they come apart. Great fun.

Yep, good game. Especially starting close with a handgun then switching to the .22 rifle once it gets out a ways. I prefer the yellow foam practice balls though - they don't fly as far when hit, and they show up very nice in the green grass.

I can go out to about 150 yards, but the eggs are a doubled edges target. Once broken, they will attract other things that could be really good targets also.

I regularly shoot prairie dogs out to 200 yds with the 22.
In bpcr 22 competition we shoot the handgun sillouette ram mounted on a swinger at 200. Some 22 bpcr shoots shoot the standard 22 sillouettes from 60-200 yds.
I have a gong set at 270 yds off the deck, it's no big feat to ring that with the lowall,

Took my eggs out today, and grabbed the trusty Remington 541T-HB with her Nikon optic. Probably a poor choice of ammo, but it was fun trying...used some CCI Green Tag that I've had laying around here for a for years.
Seems the stuff would fire just fine, and I with a few adjustments...I found that hitting a piece of steel plate(about 11"x11") at 150 yards to be downright easy{that is after the first 20 rounds}.
Now to the eggs! I set them out and let them get good and hot in the sun. The actual distance was 208 yards(I put the steel plate next to them and ranged with my Leupold RX-II). After 50 rounds, the count was five dead eggs....definitely not the best shooting I've ever done.

Our club has Egg Shoots each year...Maximum range is 100 yds...(our range limit) We have short range shoots with handguns and rifles offhand but bench for 100 yds. In some cases we DO NOT adjust scopes from 50 to 100 yds...instead we rely on a holdover at 100. It can run from 5 to 7 inches depending on type of .22 ammo....a side wind makes it even more challenging... We also have a name for a dead center hit ... "omelet"...other side or top hits are just hits...but when you hit dead center it really splatters...hence the "omelet" call.
In order to keep the range clean, we lay down plastic sheeting to catch the splatter...and then just roll the plastic up and toss it...A trick we use to hold the eggs is a length of wire...12 inches long or so...bent into a loop at one end and turned down 90degrees to hold the egg...other end in placed into a drilled board...works great... we also got some pidgeon eggs glued to black boards for small bore centerfires...Lotsa fun.........
I am not sure how 200 yard plus ranges would work...most likely would be just plain luck...but with .22's, you never know. One of our club members shot a 3/8", 5 shot group at 100 yds with a modified Ruger 10/22 and an 8x scope...so I guess anything is possible...

I have an idea that shooting from field position's without bi-pod would be a challange with any rifle shooting at egg's at 200yds. Sounds like fun!!

After reading your post, I just had to try it. Sat up 6 eggs on a sawhorse at lasered 191 yds (couldn't get 200 due to weeds). I shot 50 rds of ammo with all the eggs still intact. Tomorrow I will pin up a spotter to see why I missed. Still it was fun. Normally on a wind still day, I shoot about an inch group at 100. At 200, no clue.

Scott,
I shoot ASSRA Schuetzen matches out to 200 yards bench rest. Original Ballard action with a Win M52 Target Barrel. 15x Fecker scope. Targets are 10 scoring rings .75" across and the bull is 1.5" diameter. Total size of the target is 18"x20". 200 yards is a bit tricky, but you can trick it right back. Weigh your ammo. Make sure it's the same lot# then weigh each round for uniformity. Have a good spotting scope and know how to read the wind and mirage. Take your time, and squeeze off your shots. My rifle can put them in the same hole at 50 yards with relative ease, 100 yards gets a bit more challenging, and 200 yards is downright fun (or maddening).
I can't remember what my best score is, but lets just say there are much better riflemen out there than I. I can say that during the Honors Match one year (This is one shot, offhand, 200 yards, any rifle, closest shot to center) I did manage to crease the top of the target with that 22, thus ensuring that I got to put my name on the target. Most competitors use a centerfire for that match.
With the right ammo, the right rifle, a good scope, and discipline, you should be able to scramble some eggs.
Regards,

It's supposed to be nasty weather here in Arkansas this weekend, but I've got another dozen eggs! I'm going to use some of the advice given in the post above, as well as measure the rim thickness to reduce the 'locktime error possiblities'. I just hope I can find enough rims the same thickness out of this box of Federal ammo...we will see?!?!?
Which brings me to another idea for a topic....I'll start that in a moment.
I'll have a better understanding this time around, and hopefully some consistent ammo...wish me luck!!
Scott (I like the luck) B

Scott (I will try this again!) B CCI Green Tag is the ammo I used for the postal match. Best ammo I had (I think).

When I would go squirrel hunting growing up, my dad would line up pine cones on tree stumps and turn me loose with a 10-22. Hit them with CCI hollow points and watch them explode. Gonna do the same thing this year, only with dad and my son.
