My 40/82 was mfg'd in 1879 and I was able to buy some reloads from a company in New Mexico but they would not say if it was black or smokeless powder, they are solid lead I have 2 boxs of peter factory loads, marked in pencil the price of $1.65. My guess is that my grandfather purchased these in the early1900s and the are marked smokeless at 260 grain soft point, is there anyone out there that has a smokeless load for this rifle? I do not think it was ever fired and I am not looking foward to it. Thanks

My old Cartridges of the World book shows...
260gr. bullet - 23grs. of 4759 - MV 1425 - ME 1180
Pretty much duplicates what it shows for a factory load.

Just what make is your 40-82? Is it a Winchester lever rifle, or a single shot such as a Remington rolling block, or a Sharps?. If you have a rifle that old, and you think it's never been fired, it must be in some sort of mint condition. I, personally might shoot it. But, probably not.

Bill. It's a 1886 lever rifle and no it has not been fired and is in mint condition, thanks for your interest and I probably will not ever fire it. Did I mention it is a winchester?

OK, now you can have some fun that doesn't require firing the rifle. The Cody Firearms Museum in Cody, Wyoming has all the Winchester factory records from nearly day one. For a fee, you can get a letter from them noting the build and ship dates from the factory. Many times it will say the particular firearm was shipped to a dealer, others were shipped directly to a customer. Regardless, the factory letter will add some provenance (as well as a certain amount of value) to a particular rifle. It sounds like you have a wonderful and rare piece there! I would certainly have it appraised by a reputable appraiser, one who is familiar with old firearms. Be cautious, there are those out there who will undervalue it and attempt to buy it from you for less than actual worth. The Blue Book of Gun Values is a good place to start for your own research, and get a good idea of what the rifle is bringing in the current market.

Yes, Cody has a website. You can look up the Buffalo Bill Museum or the Cody Firearms museum. Pretty much the same thing, all under one roof. Blue book has a website as well, but you need to be a subscriber to get information off of it. The annual Blue book is being published soon and retail is nearly $50.00. I can look at last years and PM you a ball park figure, though I would need to see some good photos of it to ascertain the NRA condition of the rifle. If it truly is mint and unfired, it should be pretty pristine and nearly 100%. This includes condition of the wood and metal.

Bill, Say that is a real nice fish, caught a 45lb. King out of the ghost hole in Garabaldi, we are just at the wrong ends of the state ( baker city) the value of my 40/82 is not an issue, I plan to pass it on as Grandpa did. 10 or 12 years ago a friend of mine had a magazine with win. serial numbers and cals. mine was mfg'd in 1875. but I will contact Cody. My Grandfather was in the Buhl, Id. country running livestock this gun and a 25/35 were his preditor control. It looks like we need some more of it. Half

It would be nice to get a letter on that rifle to pass it on. If not the value, the history is certainly added to it. A good shooting friend in Montana picked up a '92 Winchester a couple years ago, it's a 25-35 as well. He took the stock off to clean it up and found that it was presented to a ranch foreman as a gift by the ranch owner. Had the mans name and the name of the ranch, plus the date. That was pretty neat!
I was born and raised in Eastern MT, so the way I look at it, you're on the right end of the state. I'm the one on the wrong end. I feel like an Antelope thats wandered way too far from home. My brother lives in Nampa, so I get around your neck of the woods a couple times a year. I like fly fishing on the Mahler out of Ontario. Maybe someday I'll draw an Antelope tag out that way. I do get out to Bend to shoot once a month. Let me know what you come up with in your correspondence with Cody.

You are correct Charley, the 25-35 was not made in the '92. They did build a few 218 Bees' on special order, though, and they were not advertised.

I really don't know how to respond other than my favorite deer rifle doesn't weight approx. 19 lbs. now thats just a guess, but even as young man it would be more than I would like to carry, I think the term to dog gone heavy comes to mind. But thanks for your thoughts.

Yes! I have three 40-82s One is a new one that I had made on a '71 frame. One is a Rolly block and one is a restored '86. My oldest boy who lives in Alaska has one that I built up for him and he shot a moose with it. He uses 50 grains of 3031. The load that I use in the new rifle is 58.0 grains of 3031. I would not try that one in your old rifle but the 50.0 grain load would be worth a try.
As far as brass and bullets are concerned, try Buffalo Arms.com. They have everything that your would need including properly head stamped brass as does Starline.com. If you are into reloading, I sure would recommend RCBS dies and be sure to include a "Trim and File" die. The stuff is spendy but well worth the effort. My oldest boy cut his teeth on his 40-82 and not has got a moose but many, many deer with it. He shoots a lead paper-patch bullet that weighs in at about 260 grains.
Hope this info has been of some help. There is very, very little data out on this cartridge. For one, check with the Rifle magazine and also with data written by Ken Waters.
