How good are these new compact rangefinders? At the moment due to having to buy a new battery for my tractor ($120) and some other farm expenses, pocket money is tight.
But are the ones in the $200 to $300 price range any good? I only need to know the range from 50 to maybe 400 yards.

$120 seems a bit high for even a commercial battery Jerry. Check with a battery manufacturer or distributor and I bet you can cut $50 off that. IMO, any reputable brand should do well. Am interested in the answer myself as I hope Saint Nick has me in his sights for that for Christmas-lol. Looking for an 8+ yder. wc

I called to all of the auto supply places, to Intersate Battery, I even called Sears. The price range was from $95 to $135. My JD tractor requires a lot of cranking power it is a diesel tractor that has to be able to start in the cold. Also I had to look at how far did I have to drive to find one. The battery that died came with the tractor, so it lasted 25 years.
It is harvest time around here, and we had a bumper crop of everything. Besides taking stuff to market, Katie and I have canned or processed 15 cases of tomatoes, peppers, onion and other veggie. The sweet corn is next.
The battery for my Honda van cost half as much, but the engine in my Honda isn't that big and doesn't require as much cranking power.
I am hoping Santa is good to me also.

Jerry, Sometimes you can use two smaller batteries wired parallel, not in series, to replace one larger battery at some savings. RD

I thought of doing that, then I would have to build a stack rack under the hood, but that would have blocked the radiator. JD will over heat in 30 to 40 minutes if the radiator is blocked. Under the hood is the only protectived place on the tractor.

i did that on my 5th wheel, rd. well, not replaced two for one, persay, but replaced two 12's wired in series with two golf cart 6's parallelled with each other. holds a charge much longer. in my particular case, it wasn't cheaper to do this, but the "pro" at the battery shop had been trying to convince me for a couple years to do this so i finally bite. well worth the expense.
by the way, we still talking rangefinders? leica, all the way. cost a little more but as good at they get. later. k
