Archery deer season opened here in Minnesota on Sept. 19th.  It's been kind of warm for hunting.  It hit 73 today.  I went out tonight for the first time, mainly to see what I could see.  I didn't see anything but a few crow.  We're in a drought right now.  The deer gotta go to the Mississippi river for water.  I'm about 3/4 of a mile from the river as the crow fly's, so it takes the deer a while to get back to my food-plot.  I got 3 more days left before I head back to my place.  Not gonna cool off much for a week or so, then I'll be back to try again.

2nd day. All quiet, nothing moving early. Looks like rain tomorrow and windy Monday, looks like I might be done for a week or 2. Supposed to cool off also. Should be less leaves the next time I get back here to hunt.

Well I came home Monday. Meanwhile it's cooled off a bit, and my dad moved into my blind after I left. He got him a spike tonight. One of four deer that came in. Haven't heard what the other three deer were. I'll be back there next Wednesday.

Went out last night didn't see anything. Tonight one came out about 150 yards a way. Came to about 100 yards and stud there starring and snorting at something. Just a little out of bow range LOL. Then it turn to my right, put it's tail up and walked off.

Saw a doe & fawn tonight about 200 yards a way. Nothing wants to come into my food-plot. Maybe tomorrow afternoon.

Woke up to 2 1/2 inches of snow this morning. It didn't help the hunting. Saw the same doe and fawn in the same spot just as I was gettin ready to leave. The snow should melt tomorrow. But we got more snow comin for Monday.

My 13 year old nephew came down and wanted to sit in my blind with me. We didn't see anything. Snow storm tonight and tomorrow morning. We'll see how things go for tomorrow afternoon.

Had 4 come in tonight. First 1 in might have been a spike or a doe without fawns, it was to dark and far away to tell. Then a doe and single fawn came in. While I was watching them a big bodied single deer came across the field. When it got close to the food-plot the doe and fawn scurried off a ways so I figured that one was a buck for sure. He was working his way towards me. But I ran out of light before he could get close enough. I have one more afternoon before I have to go back to my apartment. I'll be back in a week.

Well, I was going to hunt for the next week. But we've had a lot of rain and now we are getting wet snow. My van will never get me back to my blind without getting stuck. I'll be lucky if I can get to it by opening firearm season November 7th.

I've made it to my blind a few times. The deer just aren't cooperating. I have one more day to hunt before I have to go back to my apartment. Then it looks like I'll be swapping my crossbow for my 308 for firearm opener Nov 7th.

Saturday Nov 7th is firearms opener. Hopefully the deer will be moving like they were during bow season. This time out if I can see em I can hit em. With any luck I'll fill my tag opening morning.

Brain fart. That's my excuse. A doe stands perfectly broadside at 100 maybe 150 yards. I put cross-hair of my 308 above the doe's back. No deer today. The 50+ temps didn't seem to keep the deer laying down. There was a fair amount of shooting. Tomorrow 25+ mph wind, that'll be fun.

Well it's not what I was hoping for.  But I am first and foremost a meat hunter.  After bow hunting for a month and a half.  Then watching that field with my 308 for 9 days with only 7 days left.  I decided to take the first deer the presented me with a good shot.

The day started out very interesting.  I went out at 10 AM.  We had a hard frost but the temps would get up into the 40's.  About 10:40 I heard a buck grunting loudly, like he was chasing a hot doe.  I blew my call but I knew he wasn't going to respond, he was busy.  About 11:30 I saw what I was sure was a deer lying down in some Diamond Willow brush about 500 yards away.  At 4:30 it came out and started feeding.  I watch that bugger for 45 minutes before I realized it feed it's way to about 225 yards.  I decided I'd take it when it turned broadside.  It was about the last minute of legal shooting light.  Finally the deer was broadside kind of quartering to me.  But I knew I could make it work.  The 308 barked and fireball shot out from the barrel.  When the rifle settled back down after the recoil, I didn't see anything running, and I couldn't see anything lying on the ground (the grass is kind of tall and the ground slops down anyways).  I didn't hear anything crashing through the brush.  I called my dad on the radio and he came right out.  He found the deer right where I shot it.   The 150 gr Power Shok 308 did it's job quick.

Only one tag here this year so I'm done until September '10.

Bill, Congrats on the deer. Looks like a good eater for sure. Mine opens next Sat. Has to be better than last year. Only saw 3 and no chance at a shot. I'm in an "earn a buck" unit and no doe last year so I've got to get one before I shoot a buck. Such horse poop. RD

Yeah, I hear they tried that earn a buck in some areas here in Minnesota this year.

Good luck in your hunting RD.
