I traded off my Pardner pump today. It was a nice shotgun but it's barrel wasn't true, POI was far to the right and it just wasn't usable for accurate shooting. Anyway, I now have a new 870 Express with 28" bbl. I have not shot it yet but I did clean and inspect it. At first I believed I had an ejection problem as shells would not eject. The ejector has tension and the extractor extracts, but the shells fall away from the extractor before they reach the ejector as you cycle slowly. If I bring the slide back quite hard it ejects and drops the shell right at my feet. My Pardner ejected quite forcefully and flung them a few feet away.

Do I have a problem with my 870, or is this normal? Is there some type of upgrade to the ejector if this is normal?

sounds like mine ...tryin ta soft stroke it i can grab the empties and pocket them but when i'm after birds and it's hot and heavy seems like they be several feet away ,try it on some double skeet and then decide cuz until u function it like it was meant to be u just wont know ,and there is a difference between empty and loaded rounds the weight for one thing ,IMO a ejected loaded round at my feet or close to it beats lookin all thru the weeds or swamp for it lolz

I shot some clays today and a few rounds of buckshot. Ejection was ok, not forceful but they cleared the chamber. I did find the action was rough and I'd have to really yank on some of the shells to get the slide back. Will this smooth out with firing, or do I need to polish my chamber?

Before you start polishing, run a hundred rounds or so thru it to smooth out. The roughness you feel is probably in the rails, not the chamber. (My 870 2-3/4 inch was a mite stiff initially.) Mine doesn't sling the MTs very far either, no more than a couple feet when shooting doubles with a snappy stroking. The ejector spring has limited stroke and doesn't give the hull a long kick.  If you try soft stroking with more than a single load, it will stove pipe.  Easy to clear, but your second (or more) bird will be long gone.

use a lite coating of good grease on the rails and bars and it should smooth out,( since i clean mine often i usually putthe smallest drop of oil on top the grease once i worked the lube in ) my express mag seemed to be a lil rougher than my wingmaster but both settled in great ( the wingmaster is really slick and seems to throw the empty's a bit farther)ummm u didnt say but were they reloads or factory loads? and was the umm stickiness more prone on the buck ?

Ok thanks guys I'll grease the rails and shot a few more boxes before I decide if I need to go further. It cycled fine on vigorous strokes during doubles, little less so dismounted and clearing. You can feel the hull being drug out of the chamber then the metal grinding of the rails, if you know what I mean. Mix of factory and once fired reloads in cheap Federal hulls. Both felt about the same, but I know my friend's 870 hates the cheap Win AA crap from Wal-Mart. I stay away from those.

Dragon, I've got an 870 3" Express. I've had it for about 12 years and have shot thousands of rounds of trap with it. If you baby it you'll never get it to eject. On the trap line I always try to slide it open and pluck the case as it tips out. About 20% of the time it drops it in the action. It's never, ever, failed to eject when it counted whether it was double trap or pheasants or gobblers. It's never really smoothed up either. It's reliable. It functions but it's certainly no $1800 shotgun. I've got a couple of 500 Mossbergs too. They eject well but you might as well carry a drum set to the field the way the forend rattles. Again, Function over form. No $1800 here either. RD

oddly enough i cant consider the aa's cheap lolz try a box in super handicap ( ouch )i dont know ur mechanical inclination but u could check the rails etc for burrs, after cycling it a few times should be easy enough to see where it's rubbing( thaz how i knew where the grease would do the most good ! )the wingmaster is a much better grade but ... i bought the express mag to drag thru the fields and i wont cry if barbed wire scratches the stock ( tho i cant say that about the wingmaster it's got a awesumely bodacious piece of wood on it )where as the express is rough mostly all the way around the wingmaster is polished..keep inmind that tho not as bad shotguns are kin to rifles and pistols ,they have their own prefernces- good luck wooing ur new gurl !

Oh yeah I'm very happy with it so far, it's a good looking piece and I was impressed with the little patterning I did. Powdered those clays nicely if I did my part. Though, this nice old guy at the range was checking the place out and wanted to shoot a round with me. He's like, don't worry I'm not a very good shot... Yeah right. Guy pulls a competition over under out of his car and, well you can imagine what happened from there. I felt like a buffoon with my new, unfamiliar cheapo pump. Good fun though.

I'll check where the metal's wearing and grease up those points, maybe polish down the road as a project.

lolz so ya got got by a ol timer huh ? lolz been there done that ,but the ol timer i got got by was a ok feller,as he said u usually shoot to the level of ur opposition , something i have to agree with, i was shootin with a bud , he was gettin 9-14 out of 25 i thought i was doin poorly hittin a 17,20,19 when the old guy politely asked to join us he was a lil miffed at himself for only gettin 24 lolz i hit 24 and my buddy hit 17 ,next round he got 25 i hit 24 and my buddy hit 18,last round the old guy hit 23( i heard sum mutterin but couldnt quite catch it ) i hit 25 and my buddy hit 16,btw ? that was the first time i shot that gun lolz sure made me wish i'd had my single along( or even the wingmaster) , that gun btw is the now well broke in 870 express mag lolz ,in any game winning can be fun but it isnt all that , u only get better by playing people better than u are and there's no shame to get skunked by a pro -especially when ur a novice ,u have no reason to feel bad ,what matters is that u tried to do ur best ( umm u did try didnt u ? nuff said ;) )the maverick pump is the cheapo gun the 870 is a work horse amigo she may not be as flashy as a merckel or as fine as a custom colt double but she usually isnt a cur and if it gets dragged thru the sand ur not out several grand , no shame amigo none at all

Yup that's the type. By not a good shot he meant 23/25 with 16 guage light loads haha. Had several thousand dollars worth of O/Us in his car, tools, choke sets, etc. Even loaned me a skeet remchoke since I didn't have one on me. He was like, too bad I'm not driving my pickup, all my good equipment is in there. I was thinking, your good equipment?!? I'm just learning the game so I did get some good pointers from him as much as you can get in one round. Good day at the range.

Dan

You can't baby a express, cycle it hard. You may also think about changing the powdered metal extractor that is in it now to a milled steel extractor that comes in the police 870's I think Midway USA is out of stock at present, but Brownells show them in stock or order directly from Remington. The Express barrel chambers are not honed like the Wingmaster from what I understand. Love them 870's!!!

I have always cycled my 870 hard, that is the only way it works dependably for me.
