When someone says a pistol fired on its own, it almost always means they pulled the trigger by accident. That is what I assumed when I read the title of this article in the St. Petersburg Times, but the massacre that followed suggests otherwise (emphasis mine) ...

Moments before, Sherri Thourot had watched her husband fire and reload the Jennings 9mm. Then he set it down for her to shoot next at the range.

That's when the handgun started firing on its own, she said, spinning around in circles, landing the Thourots and an Irish tourist in the hospital.
I once belonged to a club with a private range. Club members had shot themselves in the foot at least a few times in the club's recent history. This happened when race guns with hair triggers were drawn from a holster. The pistol would fire a burst into the shooters foot and an ambulance would need to be called.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office said the gun may have been altered, leading to the malfunction. Detectives expect to know more when they take the gun apart and inspect it as they continue to investigate.

Sherri Thourot said her son, 29-year-old Jeremy, brought the 9mm back to the United States after one of his tours in Iraq with the Navy. He gave it to them this summer.
So it may have been a souvenir from Iraq. They do not list the exact model of the Jennings pistol and I don't know much about those guns, other than they were budget pistols.

Jennings Model 58

Flynn was listed in stable condition at the hospital, while Michael Thourot was released Sunday. His wife said doctors put pins in his hand to help heal shattered bone.

...

But the freak accident won't keep her away from guns.

"I can't allow something like this to cause me to be afraid of something I've done all my life."

I am very glad they survived.

i recall when these were $68 ....not beautiful and not my first choice but they do seem to function ...i much prefer their .22, a bit smaller nothing fancy but it is one deemed a saturday nite special ,not as big and bulky as hi-points but for those on a limited budget a adequate firearm... i too read the story and i also am glad that it wasnt any serious-er than it was,but it surely was bad...thoughts abound , both with them and the leo's as well as myself ....did the disconnect fail ? had it been modified when it was overseas? it could even be possible that it was set down and something lodged in the trigger and the recoil made it rock repeatedly on the trigger? or did the trigger group malfunctioned ? i seen so many crazy comments on the web story it isnt funny and none diminish the tragedy of it happening ,never heard of a similar case either and i hope we never do ,yano .. she's got a lil cowboy in her ! ride well gurl and be safe !

Well you could say the pistol should have been cleared before going on the table for someone else to shoot. It could have been checked out before being used, since it was a souvenir from Iraq. There are lots of questions. I'm glad no one was more seriously injured, but I don't like a story about a "handgun firing on it's own" because it gives uninformed people bad impressions.

Isn't it SOP now in the military that 'souveniers' are NOT authorised?  Technically bringing that pistol into the country could get the young man in some hot water with the FedGov!  If they determine it has been 'altered', then he's definitely in trouble.

There's too many questions still in this case.

I don't know what the story is here or where/how he got the pistol. But trying to bring a weapon back from a combat theater will land a service member in prison. There are some in Leavenworth right now for trying. Sure some take the chance and get away with it, but man it's a big chance.

My father brought home a couple of P38s from WW II. The only thing I wanted to bring home from Vietnam was me.

A Jennings to me is not really a war souvenir, to me they are junk. The 22 pistols were useful and never found one to be too unsafe. I never saw one that was a 9mm, but have heard they had a .380 out at one time.

Just coming home should be all that people want when they go to war, that is just my opinion.

Jerry

one of the many stories i read concerning this mentioned the possibility of the first of three rounds that fired as "cooking off" yet for the rapidity of the next ones that can not imply -the barrel would of had to been very very hot ...from the descpriptions i read i am still perplexed , either it was a mechanical malfunction ,something got stuck in the trigger or some one isnt telling the truth ( my opinion only )

If in fact he brought that pistol home, he is in deep shit...
We had to clear customs so many times leaving country it wasn`t funny and he knew...THAT IS NOT A SOUVENIR..IT IS A VIOLATION OF THE UCMJ to even TRY to sneak a working firearm back into the states that you were not issued....Sorry for the lady, her husband and the tourists..He can say hello to a courts martial if he is still in, and he deserves it.
