I am kind of a Lyman buff and love to look thru my pre-war lyman manuals.I have even gone so far as to load my 06 with a cast 311284 and unique, using a nickel Ideal #10 complete with nickel dies and an ideal powder scoop.

So does anyone have the old Speer Wildcatt Manual? Would you be willing to part with it?

wheezen,

That is mighty kind of you. I don't need it, but others may need your manual.

Thanks,

Because of changes in powder manufactures, I try to use newer data. Some changes are minor and a few aren't. My 308 load that I used for a few years, which was Dupont IMR 4895 changed dramatically when IMR in Canada took over that line of powders. I could get my old load to fit into the cartridge case without over flowing. So I redid my loads with a lot of trial and error.

The old manuals that do not have pressure tested data can be a bit testy at times. But some of them make a good evening in the easy chair.

The latest Sierra has a lot in it but I usually have 3 or 3 open anytime I load. Probably have about 10 Ive accumulated but they never run out of good info. Each one has some special information maybe not found in another.

I check out used book store and check online for what people have.

One Katie's friends owns a book store in eastern Ontario, so she is keeping an eye out for me.

I made some good finds today at a used book store in Chapel Hill. Speer No 6 from 1964 and Speer No 7 from 1966, only $3 each.

Dragon, look in Speer #6 for 35 Whelen loads - The top charge with IMR3031 and a 250gr Speer spitzer was my favorite load.. Try to find it in any manual today... Has IMR3031 changed that much over the years..? My sporterized Springfield w/Douglas 25" would kick them out at a chronoed 2604 avg of five.. Used new Win 30-06 cases, CCI 200 primer..

Just a little rambling and reminiscing -about 30 years ago...

Yeah the load data in these manuals is very interesting. Much higher max charges but slightly lower velocities. The No 6 manual doesn't even list 223 Rem, the No 7 manual lists it as the 'new' service cartridge, and it only goes up to 55gr bullets. :nut:

Dragon. Be very very very careful with the load data in that book by Bob Hagel. His loads are so far over what is in any manual that it boggles the mind. I have that book and I've tried to work up to his load levels and never even came close before bad stuff started showing up. FWIW, most of that data first showed up in articles in HANDLOADER Magazine.

Regarding the comments about powder manufacture being changed when DuPont sold their powder line to IMR in Canada, the story I saw in one gun rag was they changed from using cotton linters to make the nitrocellulose to plain old sawdust dissolved in nitric acid to make nitrocellulose, the principle ingredient in smokeless powder. IMR says there was no change in the burning rate but I disagree based on my use of IMR-4895 in certain cartridges. What was once a max load worked up in a specific rifle was now an overload by two full grains in that same rifle with all other components being the same. If there was no change, as they claim, why did I have to reduce the load as much as I did, unless the burning rate was different?

When you look at some of the data in earlier manuals and the give data for 4831, which 4831? Old timers realize that it was milsurp 4831 that Hodgden was selling way back when but newbies could easily mistake it to mean IMR-4831 which is faster burning than current Hodgden 4831 and which is supposed to be the same as the milsurp's burning rate but which is also a bit faster burning, at least in my rifles.

Just another darn good reason to drop back and work back up when opening another can of powder that has a different lot number. Also the reason I try to buy a favored powder in the 5 or 8 pound jugs whenever possible. Then, the only time i have to do load work up with that powder is when I buy another can from a different lot or for a new cartridge. usually the price per pound is a bit less that way as well.

Paul B.
