Listeria monocytogenes is a very serious bacteria. The bacteria grows in damp or wet places and, unlike many bacterias, will grow in anaerobic (no oxygen) or aerobic (oxygen containing) environments. Listeria can replicate in areas as cold as 0*C (32* F) meaning that it not only survives refrigeration but grows in refrigerated areas. While this bacteria is devastating to dogs it is also presents an equally huge risk to humans who come in contact with the contaminated food, their dogs bodily fluids, or dog feces. Women who contract Listeriosis while pregnant are at high risk for spontaneous abortion. It is the third most common cause of meningitis in newborn babies. Listeria is also the third most common cause of food related deaths in the USA, outpacing both Salmonella and Clostridium Botulinum. An estimated 1600 cases and 260 deaths per year are the result of listeria food contamination. Many are from eating undercooked meat or drinking unpasteurized raw milk sourced directly from farms without pasteurization. Louis Pasteur knew what he was talking about clear back in 1862.

Long story short, if you handle the recalled food in Plainsman's post above or if your dog becomes sick from the recalled food take all possible steps to limit your family's exposure to this disease. Don't handle the food, and be sure to wear rubber gloves when attending to your dog or cleaning up behind him. Sanitize cages, food bowls etc. if your animal becomes sick. Lysol, bleach, quaternary ammoniums etc. should kill the bacteria.

Not trying to preach here just making you aware of the risks. RD

Every once in a while in life we need a policeman, a lawyer, a doctor and a preacher. We need a farmer three times a day, every day.

                Thanks PM.
Coincidentally, I'm taking some old venison out of the freezer this AM to make dog food with. Will grind it or chunk it, add some dehydrated veggie soup mix, and pressure can it.
